The Maronite Bishop of Canada,
Monsignuer Bishop Joseph Khoury, would like to organize a Maronite
Catholic Women's League in every Maronite Church across Canada.
The Maronite Catholic Women's
League will be a national organization with a global impact.
Some History -The Catholic
Women's League was originally started in 1906 with the aim of
educating and encouraging women to play a role in the work of the
Church at home and abroad.
The League is officially recognized
by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB- an
organization our Bishop belongs to and attends their meetings) as a
lay association of women and is affiliated with the World Union of
Catholic Women's Organizations, a world-wide federation holding
membership in the conference of International Catholic Organization
and having consultative status with agencies of the United Nations.
People today are searching for meaning in life through rites and
traditions, and other spiritual elements. Research revealed that
more women than men participate in church attendance, and this
attendance is mainly by older women.
Our challenge is to revitalize the role of the Church in our
everyday lives, in a manner that does not repeat the same activities
of old, out of habit and routine. Programs that may have been
valuable in the past are not necessarily valuable today. To create
the organization of the future, we need to create new programs and
new initiatives.
2) Maronite Culture- we need to
know the beauty of our traditions, the significance of our
worship and the history of our people and to ensure that our
heritage and inheritance are maintained and passed on for
generations to come. We should nurture our cultural heritage.
3) Social Development-
participate in the community, public and political life.
4) Charitable Activities-
ministry to serve others.
The Maronite Catholic Women's
League of Canada would be rooted in history and culture in its
ongoing commitment to the mission of the Church, and to the
nurturing of its cultural heritage.
It would be dedicated to providing
resources that help its members to realize their own true vocation
and live an authentic Christian life as contributing members to the
Church and society.
Our mission would be to spread the
message of Christ.
