St. Peter and St. Paul (Apostles)
· A Feast honoring these two great saints has been
celebrated by the Roman Catholic Church since the third century.
There is sound evidence that both St. Peter and St. Paul preached
in the city of Rome and were martyred there under the Emperor
Nero about the year 64. The Church of Rome praises them as its
founding Apostle: "Peter, our leader in faith, and Paul,
its fearless preacher. Peter raised up the Church from the faithful
flock of Israel, Paul brought God's call to the nations."
Simon, a fisherman on the Sea of Galilee, was one of the first
whom Jesus called to follow him. Changing his name to Peter,
"Rock," the Lord promised him to build his Church on
him and gave him power in heaven and on earth. Saul of Tarsus
was a zealous Jew, a Pharisee, who after his dramatic conversion
on the way to the city of Damascus became a fervent apostle of
Jesus.
Father, through St. Peter and St. Paul, your Church first received
the faith. |
