The Annunciation, March 25th
One
of the “Christmas Feasts” celebrated outside the Christmas season,
the feast of the Annunciation recalls the coming of the Angel
Gabriel to Mary at Nazareth to announce that she was to be the
Mother of Jesus.
The
Angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee named Nazareth,
to a Virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David.
The Virgin’s name was Mary. Upon arriving, the angel said to her:
“Rejoice, O highly favoured daughter! The Lord is with you. Blessed
are you among women.” She was deeply troubled by his words, and
wondered what his greeting meant.
The
angel went on to say to her: “Do not fear, Mary. You have found
favour with God. You shall conceive and bear a son and give him the
name Jesus.”
Mary said: “I am the maidservant of the Lord. Let it be done to me
as you say.”
The
feast of the Annunciation is an ancient feast of the Church.
March 25, the time of the spring equinox, was seen as a significant
day by the early Christians who regarded it as the day the world was
created, the day of Christ’s conception in Mary’s womb, and the day
of his death on the Cross.
Lenten Prayer for Spiritual Renewal
God, heavenly Father, look upon me and hear my prayer during this
holy Season of Lent. By the good works You inspire, help me to
discipline my body and to be renewed in spirit.
Without You I can do nothing. By your Spirit help me to know what is
right and to be eager in doing Your will. Teach me to find new life
through penance. Keep me from sin, and help me live by Your
commandment of love.
God
of love, bring me back Your forgiveness, open my heart to Your love,
and prepare me for the coming feast of the Resurrection of Jesus. |
