Sixth Sunday after the Holy Cross, Christ the King
October 25th, 2009
الأحد السادس بعد عيد الصّليب، عيد يسوع الملك
25 تشرين الأوّل سنة 2009

Gospel: Matthew 25: 31 – 46

Readings: Romans 12: 9 – 21

This Gospel concludes Jesus’ life as a Teacher and it is used by the Church to close the Liturgical Year. It is the best learning tool on how to prepare to meet the Lord upon his second coming and the final judgment.

This scene is not a parable; it is in fact a prophetic event, Jesus invites us through this event to be ready to answer the final question of the final judgment. “Did you really love me?”

St. John of the Cross notices that we will only be judged by love, which is generally about good deeds. If we focus on the face of the Son of Man, we notice that he is the subject in this Gospel.

He is the glorified one, surrounded by angels, the King, the Judge, the Shepherd, the Son, and the incarnate in all cases of human kind especially the hardest, hunger, in prison…What shocks us is the discovery that the subject becomes suddenly the object. He is not only all the least ones, he is instead the center for gathering and waiting for God’s mercy. Jesus accepted willingly to live humbly.

St. Simon & St. Jude, Apostles, October 28th

Little is known of Sts. Simon & Jude except that they were chosen by Jesus as apostles and appear well down on the list of the twelve. They do not figure prominently in the Gospel stories, as do some other apostles.

After Jesus’ Ascension there is no reliable account of what happened to them. Stories of their founding the Church in Syria and Egypt are groundless.

Unlike Sts. Peter and Paul, whose words and deeds are widely reported in Scripture and whose achievements dramatically affected the society of their day, Simon and Jude appear to have done little in their lives that was notable.

Yet the Church celebrates them among her founders, seeing their preaching revealing God to us and their prayers aiding their preaching revealing God to us and their prayers aiding their growth.

The apostles were not all of one mould. Some, like Peter and Paul, were active public figures immersed in the controversy and changing movements of their time. Others, perhaps like Simon and Jude, may have taken a quieter path. Yet their voices too have been heard through all the earth.

Lord, may we follow and serve You.
