Third Sunday after the Holy Cross, The Holy Rosary
October 4th, 2009

الأحد الثالث بعد عيد الصّليب، أحد الوردية
4 تشرين الأوّل سنة 2009

Gospel: Matthew 24: 23 – 31

Readings: 1 Thessalonians 5: 1 – 11

The Church invites us this week to reflect on the end of age through the Gospel of St. Matthew which leads us to the summit of times, the day when Jesus becomes all in all, when the evil is done and we all greet the king of life, as the Son of God.

A new world will begin full of love and hope. As the disciples, preoccupied with the new world, waited for it, we, too, are waiting anxiously for the new world. Jesus’ answer to the disciples’ question about the end of time was calming.

He taught them a lesson from the fig tree which he damned because it didn’t bear fruit. It was a sign of the beginning of a new meaning. It has tender branches that announce the coming of the spring and summer, the season of life.

Jesus announced this definite coming and that the new life begins with him. For this reason, he invited them, and us through them to be strong and to have courage because the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Our Lady of the Rosary

This feast was established by St. Pius V to commemorate the victory of the Christian naval fleet, commanded by Don Juan of Austria, against the Turks at Lepanto in 1571.

Don Juan attributed the great victory to the intercession of the Blessed Mother. The Rosary was revealed to St. Dominic by the Blessed Virgin about the beginning of the thirteenth century, and is one of the most beautiful of all devotions.

As one recent Pope said, “The recitation of the Rosary helps the individual to meditate on the mysteries of the Lord’s life as seen through the eyes of her who was closest to the Lord.

St. Francis of Assisi, October 4th

Saint Francis is called the little poor man of Assisi. He was born in the year 1182 in the town of Assisi in Italy. His father’s name was Bernadone. He was a very wealthy merchant. Francis was brought up in luxury and gaiety. He spent a considerable portion of his wealth in extravagant pleasures.

Sometime after this, Francis was laid up in bed for many months on account of some serious disease. He was about to die but the Lord saved him as he had to carry out a definite mission in his life. Francis gave up his old ways and habits and set up to serve God.

Francis went from village to village preaching the love of God. He invited people to join him in his life of service if they were willing. The Gospel of kindness and love of Francis soon spread all over Europe and earned for him the name of St. Francis. People called him the little poor man of Assisi.

He lived for ever in the hearts of many. St. Francis collected many followers and founded the Order of the Franciscans. The members had to take a vow of poverty, chastity, love and obedience. St. Francis died in 1228.

His followers built a beautiful Church around him on the hill of Assisi. The influence of St. Francis and the sweet aroma of the life he lived will last for ever.
