Sunday of the Announcement to Mary
November 22nd, 2009

أحد بشارة العذراء، عيد استقلال لبنان
22 تشرين الثاني سنة 2009

Gospel: Luke 1: 26 – 28

Readings: Galatians 3: 15 – 22

St. Luke presents to us in today’s Gospel an exquisite scene, which shows God’s message to Mary through the Angel Gabriel. The Virgin was at her house in Nazareth when the angel announced the news about her bearing the divine child in this unknown city which nothing good comes out of.

The first word said by the angel Gabriel “Khairé” represents the peaceful greeting of the Greek. It can also be translated to “Rejoice”.

Mary is invited to rejoice with Jerusalem because the Lord is with her; we are not facing a greeting but we are before a call to rejoice in the Christian visit promised by God since the beginning of days.

Mary was perplexed because she understood that these words held a hidden meaning that she was about understand. We know that the divine visions are always accompanied by confusion.

The Virgin exclaimed about the feasibility of God’s promise. The angel explained to her that she will have a Son who will be the Messiah.

The Miraculous Medal, November 27th

Saint Catherine Labouré, of the Daughters of Charity, received visions of the Blessed Mother which were to result in the introduction of the Miraculous Medal.

During the vision that took place on July 18, 1830, in the chapel of the motherhouse near Paris, France, the Blessed Mother sat on the director’s chair near the altar.

After confiding certain matters to Saint Catherine, she said, “Come to the foot of the altar, there graces will be shed upon all, great and little, who as for them.”

During the vision that occurred on November 28, 1830, the Blessed Mother stood with her hands outstretched, brilliant rays of light coming from rings on her fingers. Some rings gave off no rays, representing graces for which souls forget to ask.

Our Lady’s feet were crushing the head of the serpent. An oval framed the Blessed Mother, showing these words in letters of gold: “O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.”

Miraculous Medal Prayer

O Virgin Mother of God, Mary Immaculate, we dedicate and consecrate ourselves to you under the title of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal.

May this Medal be for each one of us a sure sign of your affection for us and a constant reminder of our duties toward You. Ever while wearing it, may we be blessed by your loving protection and preserved in the grace of your Son.

O most Powerful Virgin, Mother of our Saviour, keep us close to you every moment of our lives. Amen.
