Sunday of the Consecration of the Church, All Saints
November 1st, 2009

Gospel: Matthew 25: 31 – 46

Readings: Hebrews 12: 18 – 24

“The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree; he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.” As we conclude the liturgical year and before starting a new season, that of the coming of the Lord, the Church remembers today all the Saints who lived a special relationship with God.

We remember the Saints to honour them, follow their footsteps and receive graces through their intercession. The Lord reminds us through the readings that “The assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven.”

In today’s Gospel, St. Matthew draws for us a path to reach the life of the children of the light through the love of the less fortunate and the weak, and through the service and the sacrifice of oneself through God’s love.

The opinion of the old human being and the new on through faith in Christ is vastly different. The first one’s relationship with God is that of a slave.

The second one discovers that God, who is love, is inviting him to rejoice in knowing Him.

The Lord for him, is not a god on top of a mountain, he’s rather incarnated in every one of those less fortunate. To be a saint is to be human being. And in order to be that, a human being should be able to balance between his mind, heart and will. The guide on this journey is God’s teachings.

 Saints, November 1st

This feast which has its beginnings in the Christian churches of the fifth and sixth centuries celebrates al those saints, canonized or not, who enjoy the happiness of the kingdom of heaven.

Our relatives and friends, multitudes unknown “which no one can number from all tribes and peoples and tongues,” stand before God’s throne in joyful praise. They are remembered this day. God’s amazing grace has brought them home.

And we are united to them. The feast of All Saints turns our eyes to that “great cloud of witnesses” who are with God, yet still with us. We share in their love and are inspired by their example. They attract us to journey to the Kingdom of God.

All Souls, November 2nd

The early Christians, like their pagan ancestors, remembered their dead on certain days of the year. The present date for our yearly commemoration of the dead was established in the tenth century.

We remember the dead prayerfully so that God will “strengthen our hope that all our departed brothers and sisters will share in Christ’s resurrection.”

In the words of Vatican Council II, “Fully conscious of the Mystical Body of Jesus Christ, the Church on earth honours with great respect the memory of the dead, and, because it is a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead that they may be freed from their sins, she offers her suffrages for them.”
