Sixth Sunday of the Easter Season.
May 17th, 2009
الأحد السادس بعد القيامة
17 أيار سنة 2009

Gospel: Luke 24: 36 – 48

Readings: Romans 1: 1 – 13

The disciples did not recognize Jesus, the Risen Lord. They did not believe that Jesus the crucified was going to rise from the dead.

Jesus had to prove for them that he was alive using material evidence; showing them the wounds marks in his hands and feet, he ate with them and reminded them of his teachings when he was with them.

He also explained for them the prophecies and psalms. He promised them he would send his spirit to help them. Then, they believed.

The main focus of the sixth Sunday of Easter is the disciples’ experience of Jesus’ glorious presence among them. Jesus opened the disciples’ hearts and made them understand the word incarnate through the three years of his teachings.

-          This is an important Reminder to our members: Our annual elections are scheduled for Tuesday, May 19 at 7PM. This is the most important responsibility for members.

All positions are open. Nominate yourself or another member. We need fresh and new ideas to help revitalize the council and to make it a more important and uniting part of our community.

The elections will take approximately 30 minutes and will be followed by a complimentary dinner. Euchre or other card games will be played too. Please make an effort to be there.

Congratulations to Fady Feghali & Amy Peters who were united in the Holy Bonds of Matrimony at St. Anthony’s Parish on May 16th, 2009. May God bless them both and give them a long and happy life together.

The Ascension of the Lord

The story of the Ascension of the Lord, celebrated as of the twelve great feasts of the Church, is found in the book of the Acts of the Apostles. The moment of the Ascension is told in one sentence:

“He was lifted up before their eyes in a cloud which took Him from their sight.” Christ made his last appearance on earth, forty days after his Resurrection from the dead.

The Acts of the Apostles states that the disciples were in Jerusalem. Jesus appeared before them and commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the “Promise of the Father.” He stated, “You shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

After he led them to the Mount of Olives, he commissioned them to be his witnesses. As the disciples watched, Jesus lifted up his hands, blessed them, and then was taken up out of their sight.

St. Rita, Patron Saint of Impossible Cases, May 22nd

St. Rita of Cascia, whose feast is celebrated on May 22nd, was born at Rocca Porena, Italy of elderly parents. Being along in years, they did not want to see their only child alone in life and so they opposed her desire to become a nun and persuaded her to marry a man against her will at the age of 18 and soon twin boys were born to them.

After eighteen abusive years, her husband was killed in a brawl but not after Rita had converted him form his wicked ways, when her two sons died, a year after their father, Rita applied several times for admission into the Augustinian Convent at Cascia, but was refused each time, as its rule permitted only virgins. Finally in 1413, she was allowed to enter where she remained for 42 years.

She became known for her austerities and penances. Rita prayed to God that he might share with her at least part of his pains. Slowly one of the thorns from the Crucifix was loosened, and implanted itself so deeply into Rita’s forehead that she fainted. Her wound became putrid and fetid.

She was banished to a small room far from the other’s rooms. There she remained cheerfully for 15 years while the wound grew steadily painful. At the moment of her death, with all the nuns surrounding her, the convent bell began to chime, the chord being pulled by a spiritual force.

At the same time, the nuns realized a wonderful fragrance had filled the rooms. Rita’s wound had healed and her face glowed with an eternal smile. Rita’s saintly remains, which were preserved so well, spread a sweet odour throughout the Church.

She remained there for 38 years before being moved into the Church. People sill come to see her to this day. Rita trained herself to see everything with a view of eternity. Rita died on May 22nd, 1457. Her body, which has remained incorrupt, is venerated today in Cascia and all over the world.

Novena to Saint Rita

O holy protector of these who are in greatest need, you who shine  as a star of hope in the midst of darkness, blessed Saint Rita, bright mirror of God’s grace, in patience and fortitude you are a model of all the states of life. I unite my will with the will of God through the merits of my Saviour Jesus and through the merits of the Holy Virgin Mary and your own graces and virtues, I ask you to obtain my earnest petition, provided it be for the greater glory of God and my own sanctification. (Mention the Request).

Saint Rita, advocate of the Impossible, pray for us.

Pray 3 times: 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary, and 1 Glory be.
