Fifth Sunday of the Easter Season, Mother’s Day.
May 10th, 2009
الأحد الخامس من زمن القيامة، عيد الأمّ.
10 أيار سنة 2009

Gospel: John 21: 15 – 19

Readings: Ephesians 2: 1 – 10

Peter denied Jesus, his Teacher, three times in the past, and three times today he declared his love for him.

Jesus chose him as the shepherd of his Church verifying that love is the foundation of the Church. This love won’t be complete unless it is united with the sacrifice of one’s self to the point of martyrdom.

In John’s Gospel, Jesus said to the disciples on the way to Emmaus, “What do you want?” Jesus said his last words: “Follow me.”

Peter’s three times declaration of his love for Jesus today, when he appeared after his resurrection on the shores of the Sea of Tiberias, the morning of the miraculous fishing, erased Peter’s denial of Jesus.

It also enabled him to lead the Church, which represents Jesus’ authority. Peter has to sacrifice himself for the Lord’s Church, the same way Jesus died for the salvation of his people.

Mother’s Day History

Origin of Mother’s Day goes back to the era of ancient Greek and Romans. But the roots of Mother’s Day history can be traced in the UK where a Mothering Sunday was celebrated much before the festival saw the light of the day in US.

However, the celebration of the festival as it is seen today is a recent phenomenon and not even a hundred years old. Thanks to the hard work of the pioneering women of their times, Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis that the day come into existence.

Today the festival of Mother’s Day is celebrated across 46 countries (though on different dates) and is hugely popular affair.

Millions of people across the globe take the day as an opportunity to honour their mothers, thank them for their efforts in giving them life, raising them and being their constant support and well wisher.

Mother’s Day Poem

Another Mother’s Day is here, bringing joy and pleasures new, on this special day, Mother dear, I want to remember you.

I cannot give you costly gifts, and I’ve told you this before, no matter what I give to you, you give much back, much more.

I’m giving you a pure, sweet rose, gathered in the early morn, this rose you planted in my heart, the day I was born. In kindly, loving thoughts of you, and with the faith you still impart, the rose I give to you today, is the love that is in my heart.
