Sunday of the Prodigal Son, St. Joseph’s Feast
أحد الابن الشاطر، عيد القديس يوسف
March 15th, 2009

Gospel: Luke 15: 11 – 32

Readings: 2 Corinthians 13: 5 – 13

Some might think that today’s text is the center of St. Luke’s Gospel, preceded by the lost sheep and the lost penny. These are normal situations that could happen to anyone every day.

The importance of the two parables comes from Jesus’ educational opinion, “I say to you: the angels will rejoice when a sinner repents.” This explanation gives the three parables great significance because it explains the value of the sinner in God’s eyes.

Jesus continues to show “The Forgiving Father” before the tax collectors and the sinners. That father doesn’t deny his son’s right to a private life. Once the son starts to spend wildly, he wears the form of the sinner and throws away all the values and follows sin.

After losing everything he gets a job similar to his financial situation. The son will decide to go back to give a meaning to his life. The reality is different. The father doesn’t have to reprimand his son. The father is rejoicing because his son is back.

Prayer to St. Joseph

Glorious St. Joseph, model of all who are devoted to labour, obtain for me the grace to work in the spirit of penance in expiation of my many sins;
To work conscientiously by placing love of duty above my inclinations; to gratefully and joyously deem it an honour to employ and to develop by labour the gifts

I have received from God, to work peacefully and in moderation and patience, without ever shrinking from it through weariness or difficulty to work;

Above all, with purity of intention and unselfishness, having unceasingly before my eyes death the account.

I have to render of time lost, talents unused, having done, and vain complacency in success, so baneful to the work of God. All for Jesus, all for Mary, all to imitate thee, O patriarch St. Joseph! This shall be my motto for life and eternity.
