Third Sunday of the Pentecost Season, St. Anthony of Padua’s Feast
June 14th, 2009
الأحد الثالث من زمن العنصرة، عيد مار أنطونيوس البادوي
14 حزيران سنة 2009

Gospel: John 14: 21 – 27

Readings: 1 Corinthians 2: 1 – 10

The coming of the Spirit upon the disciples, the apostles, the preachers and the early Church, has reached the Church everywhere even our present time. St. Paul didn’t care about the eloquence of his words or the appearance of the universal Church.

His main concern was Jesus the Crucified. He experienced the presence of the Spirit and his gifts in his life, his preaching and the lives and hearts of all faithful. Whoever lives by the word of God, will receive Jesus in their hearts.

Jesus will teach them and reminds them about his teachings. He will make them gradually understand their special experience. The divine inspiration is unique. It comes from the Father and was realized by the crucifixion of Jesus the Son and his resurrection.

St. Anthony of Padua, June 13

St. Anthony was born at Lisbon, Portugal, in 1195. His surname comes from the Italian City where he lived the latter part of his life. His parents were members of the Portuguese nobility. His early education took place at the Cathedral of Lisbon.

At the age of 15, he joined the Regular Canons of St. Augustine and was transferred to the monastery at Coimbra two years later because of distractions caused by his friend’s visits. Anthony devoted himself to prayer and study and became a learned scholar of the Bible.

In 1220, Don Pedro of Portugal brought the relics of Franciscans Martyrs to Coimbra. This had a tremendous effect on Anthony, who requested admission to the Franciscans. In 1221, he was accepted. Soon after, he set out for Morocco to preach the Gospel to the Moors.

On the way to Morocco, he was forced to return to Europe because of illness. On his return home, a storm drove his ship to the shores of Italy, where he would live for the rest of his life. A gifted preacher, he was called upon to teach theology to his fellow Franciscans.

He was the first member of the Franciscans to be honoured. Anthony drew large crowds wherever he went in Italy, but his greatest success was in Padua where the entire city flocked to hear his word and welcomed him as another St. Francis.

After the death of Francis, Anthony became the minister provincial of Emilia or Romagna. In 1226, he was elected as the envoy from the general chapter to Pope Gregory IX. Soon after, he was released to Padua, where he preached until his death. Anthony died on June 13, 1231, at the age of 36. He is a Doctor of the Church.

Prayer for the Holy Spirit

O Holy Spirit, plant in my soul the tree of true life, which is Mary; cultivate it and tend it so that it may grow and blossom and bring forth the fruit of life in abundance. O Holy Spirit, give me great devotion to Mary. Give me great confidence in her maternal heart and an abiding refuge in her mercy. Amen.
