Sunday of the Genealogy

Gospel: Matthew 1: 1 – 17

Readings: Romans 1: 1 – 12

This Sunday of the Genealogy comes directly before Christmas. On this day, the Church remembers the entrance of Jesus into the history of humanity and through a specific genealogy.

Jesus is a complete and whole man and at the same time he is the Saviour. All previous generations prepared consciously and unconsciously for Jesus’ coming.

The genealogy of Jesus, as mentioned in the Gospel of Matthew was a series of repetitions until he reaches Joseph the Husband of Mary.

At that point, an incident occurred to change the history. Joseph was not the father of Jesus. He is only the “Husband of Mary of whom Jesus was born.” The genealogy is directed to Jesus.

He doesn’t belong to this genealogy without Joseph who wasn’t his biological father. Jesus is unique because his biological father is unknown to humankind.

To Mary and Joseph he is the Son of God. Jesus enters the history of humanity, adopts it and organizes it: three eras, each one of them contains fourteen generations which all end with Jesus. With Jesus, the promise to Abraham was kept.

With Jesus, this long history becomes a history of salvation for all humanity who was eager to be saved.
