Sunday of the Birth of John the Baptist
December 6th, 2009

أحد مولد يوحّنا المعمدان.
6 كانون الأوّل سنة 2009

Gospel: Luke: 1: 57 – 66

Readings: Galatians 4: 22, 5:1

This Sunday we celebrate the birth of John the Baptist. Through today’s readings, we are invited to remember that we are the children of the New Covenant, born to be free in the Lord our Father.

Through Jesus each one of us was freed from slavery. Jesus saved us from all the depression the human kind was going through.

Today we are invited to protect that freedom and use it to shield ourselves. Luke’s Gospel shows us the freedom that Zechariah and Elizabeth lived by ignoring all traditions no matter how important they are.

They continued living according the will of God and raise the child they have been waiting for. Jesus praised John saying: “Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one has arisen greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.” John was born through a divine intervention.

He was named from heaven not according to human logic. Zechariah’s and Elizabeth’s relatives made a mistake similar to that of the Galatians. Both of them did not know what went on during the heavenly vision.

The Immaculate Conception of Mary, December 8th

The Solemn Feast of Mary’s Immaculate Conception, celebrated nine months before the feast of her birth (September 8), recalls the Christian belief that Mary was preserved free from all stain of original sin from the moment of her conception by her mother, Ann.

For this reason the feast day prayer asks God to “trace in our actions the lines of her love, in our hearts her readiness of faith.” The bishops of the United States, with firm belief in Mary’s intercession, confided their new nation to her care under the title of her Immaculate Conception.

Prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe

Pray, O Holy Mother, for all those responsible for our country and all countries in the world.

Our Lady of Guadalupe, inspire the authorities, so that with scrupulous respect for human dignity, and in a spirit of service to their countries, they would always search for peace, harmony, and real progress, as a sign of the morality in their public life. Amen.
