Tenth Sunday of the Pentecost Season.
August 2nd, 2009
St. Anne’s Feast.
الأحد العاشر من زمن العنصرة
2 آب سنة 2009

Gospel: Matthew 12: 22 – 32

Readings: 1 Corinthians 12: 1 – 11

The healing of the blind and mute is an ordinary occasion that created a wide controversy. Matthew takes us to the miracle in one verse.

The text is a meeting with Jesus, followed by a small conversation and a long argument between Jesus and the Pharisees. The basic healing changed the life of the sick, astonished the crowd, created questions and caused us to learn about God.

The deeds give the words their value. People are asking about Jesus’ identity; this is very valuable in itself. It led to questions about the one who performed it.

Everyone understands that the salvation is near. They started to doubt that Jesus is the one they have been waiting for. To be satisfied with the miracles and ignoring Jesus and his identity is dangerous to the faithful. The miracle is only a way to reach the Saviour.

The Transfiguration of the Lord, August 6th

The divinity of Christ was made manifest to Sts. Peter, James and John when Jesus appeared before them on Mount Tabor and his face and clothing shone radiantly.

His appearance before the apostles was a confirmation to them of his relation to the Church and his role as the Son of God. A feast in honour of the Transfiguration has been celebrated in the Christian churches of the East since the fifth century.

In the Middle Ages, as interest grew in the Holy Land and the various sites connected with the life of Jesus, this feast was established in the Western Roman Empire.

Lord Jesus, through your Transfiguration on the mount, strengthen our hearts. Enlightened by your grace, may we share in the brightness of your glory.
