Third Sunday of the Easter Season

الأحد الثالث من زمن القيامة

Gospel: Luke 24: 13 – 35

Readings: 2 Timothy 2: 8 – 13

On the third Sunday of the Easter joyful season of salvation, we remember the disciples of Emmaus who left Jerusalem with broken hearts.

They returned to Jerusalem after meeting the Lord. They recognized him when he broke the bread of life.

St. Paul encourages his disciple Timothy to be patient when faced with obstacles. The Resurrection is a long journey which ends with Jesus who gathers all his people who are faithful to him.

Jesus took the initiative and walked with the two disciples from Emmaus who were confused and in doubt. Jesus did not fear the danger around his followers because he gives peace to all those who meet him in an atmosphere of peace and joy.

Jesus explained to them the Holy Scriptures. He took the bread, blessed and broke it and gave it to them celebrating the Holy Mass. Jesus, the Risen Lord is present with us in the Bread of Life and the Word and salvation, so we preach and carry the joy of salvation to the world.

St. Joseph the Worker, May 1st

On May 1st, 1955, Pope Pius XII addressed the Catholic Association of Italian Workers and declared that this day would be known as the feast day of St. Joseph the Worker.

In the Communist bloc, May 1st is celebrated as May Day, which glorifies the relationship between the worker and the socialist state.

It is obvious that the Church was very concerned with this, and wanted to demonstrate to its faithful that it was equally concerned about the plight of the working man and woman. Joseph, a carpenter, taught his trade to his son, Jesus, and provided for his family.

It is especially important to remember this human element when contemplating the lives of both St. Joseph and the Holy Family.

Lord God, maker of all things, you give us skill of mind and body to labour and serve in this world. May we follow the way of St. Joseph who worked with Christ at his side, and may all we do be a sign of your greatness and power.

The Eucharist

“If in our time Christians must be distinguished above all by the ‘Art of Prayer’, how can we feed a renewed need to spend time in spiritual converse, in silent adoration, in heartfelt love of before Christ present in the Most Holy Sacrament?

How often, dear brothers and sisters, have I experienced, and drawn from it strength, consolation and support! The Eucharist is a priceless treasure: by not only celebrating it but also by praying before it outside of Mass we are enabled to make contact with the very wellspring of grace.”

    Pope John Paul II
