Fifteenth Sunday of the Pentecost Season
St. Romanos’ Feast.
September 6th, 2009
الأحد الخامس عشَر من زمن العنصرة، عيد القدّيس رومانوس
6 أيلول سنة 2009

Gospel: Luke 7: 36 – 50

Readings: 1 Thessalonians 1: 1 – 10

The Gospel we heard today on the fifteenth Sunday of the Pentecost Season in one of the most beautiful texts in Luke’s Gospel.

The Pharisee who had invited him, thought to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him” and he wouldn’t have let her wash his feet with her hair.

She is a sinner; she is a low life according to Simon the Pharisee. Jesus answered John’s question with miracles that showed that he was a great prophet in the midst of the crowds. Luke didn’t want to show Jesus as a prophet only but as a mystery that he can only accept as the friend of sinners and tax collectors.

We notice that Luke didn’t mention the woman’s name or her social class. She represents each person who lived in human weakness and now is asking for forgiveness.

Luke gathered in one place Jesus and the Pharisee who considers himself as above sin and a woman who is shunned by the Pharisees. This woman enters the Pharisee’s house asking for forgiveness and love. Her sins were forgiven because she loved unconditionally.

The Birth of Mary, September 8th

Along with the birth of Jesus and St. John the Baptist, Mary’s birth has been celebrated by the Church from early times. In fourth-century Jerusalem a feast of her birth was celebrated at the Church of St. Ann, probably inspiring the Church of Rome also to celebrate too, this event. Mary’s birth is seen always as part of God’s plan for the salvation of the world through Jesus Christ.

O Mary, you are blessed, for the mysteries of the prophets are fulfilled in you. You were in the burning bush and in the cloud that Moses saw; You were on the ladder rising up to heaven that Ezekiel saw; You were in the ark of the covenant, that David saw. At your birth these mysteries are fulfilled. Glory to the Father, who sent his only Son through you.
