Seventh Sunday of the Pentecost Season.
July 12th, 2009
الأحد السابع من زمن العنصرة
12 تموز سنة 2009

Gospel: Luke 10: 1 – 7

Readings: 2 Corinthians 3: 1 – 6

The mission of the Gospel is not confined to the twelve disciples. The preaching in Palestine spread to the pagan world. Jesus today, on the seventh Sunday of the Pentecost season, invites the seventy-two disciples like the apostles to their mission of preaching.

The same way Moses called his seventy-tow helpers in the desert. God wrote the Ten Commandments and then created the Churches served by the apostles.

St. Paul insisted in his letter to the Corinthians on God’s grace. Jesus provided them with this commandment: “Greet no one on the way.”

It is like telling them “The time is drawing near. The preaching about God’s kingdom doesn’t allow delays or time wasting in this house or the other.” The Church’s journey accompanied by Jesus is like an infant reaching out to be held.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel, July 16

The Prophet Elijah ascended Mount Carmel to pray for the heavens to open when the country around him was dry and without water. Finally, he saw a small cloud coming in from the sea bearing life-giving rain.

In the twelfth century, Christian hermits came to live and pray on this mountain. In their vision, the cloud was a symbol of Mary, the Mother of God, who brought life to a parched world.

They honoured her under the title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and later founded an order to prayer under her patronage.

Most beautiful Mother of God, Splendour of heaven, you bring fruitfulness to the earth and assist us in our needs.

Star of the Sea, show yourself a mother to me. Let the healing rain of your comfort fall gently upon me. Hear my voice when I call. Mother of God, I place my cause in your hands. Amen
