Second Sunday after the Epiphany
January 18th, 2009
الأحد الثاني بعد الدنح

Gospel: John 1: 35 – 42

Readings: 2 Corinthians 4: 5 – 15

The invitation of the first disciples and the twelve apostles is a very remarkable point in Jesus’ public life and his saving mission. John the evangelist gave this invitation a special look.

He mentions that Jesus’ first apostles were John’s disciples. The Baptist prepares the way for Jesus in a direct approach, not through testimony and Baptism only but through the invitation to his disciples to follow Jesus: “He should increase, and I should decrease.”

Many people from the Corinthian Church had doubts about Paul’s apostleship and his mission, because he wasn’t a disciple of Jesus. Paul was forced to protect his mission without complaining. He confirmed that nothing, not even death, can keep him away from being renewed daily in Christ.

St. Paul’s mission got his value, not from God’s presence in him, and the shining of the knowledge of the glory in Jesus’ face. St. Paul’s mission is: hardship and death with Jesus the crucified. It is also glory and eternal life with the risen Lord.

Prayer before Communion

O Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you,” regard not my sins but the faith of your Church, and deign to give her peace and unity according to Your Will: who live and reign, God, world without end. Amen.
