Third Sunday after the Holy Cross
The Holy Rosary
الأحد الثالث بعد الصليب
October 5th , 2008

Gospel: Matthew 24: 23 – 31

Readings: Philippians 3: 14, 4: 1

The Church invites us this week to reflect on the end of age through the Gospel of St. Matthew which leads us to the summit of times, the day when Jesus becomes all in all, when the evil is done and we all greet the king of life, as the Son of God. A new world will begin full of hope and love.

As the disciples, preoccupied with the new world, waited for it, we, too, are waiting anxiously for the new world. Jesus’ answer to the disciples’ question about the end of time was calming. He taught them a lesson from the fig tree which he damned because it didn’t bear fruit.

It was a sign of the beginning of a new meaning. It had tender branches that announce the coming of the spring and summer, the season of life. Jesus announced his definite coming and that the new life begins with him.

For this reason, he invited them and us through them to be strong and to have courage because the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Our Lady of the Rosary

This feast was established by St. Pius V to commemorate the victory of the Christian naval fleet, commanded by Don Juan of Austria, against the Turks at Lepanto in 1571.

Don Juan attributed the great victory to the intercession of the Blessed Mother. The Rosary was revealed to St. Dominic by the Blessed Mother about the beginning of the thirteenth century, and is one of the most beautiful of all devotions.

As one recent Pope said, "The recitation of the Rosary helps the individual to meditate on the mysteries of the Lord’s life as seen through the eyes of her who was closest to the Lord."
