Pentecost Sunday, Mother’s Day May 11th, 2008

Gospel: John 14: 15 – 20

Readings: Acts 2: 1 – 21

The Church celebrates today and the following three Sundays, the incident of the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and the Church in the upper room as promised by Jesus and talked about by the prophets.

The rush of a violent wind, the divided tongues of fire and the ability of the apostles to speak different languages is a sign of the power of the Holy Spirit who filled them and through them, the whole world.

Jesus promised during the Last Supper, to ask the Lord to send them the Spirit of truth to stay with them and in them, so they can feel the Spirit’s presence in them.

We ask the Holy Spirit today present in us, to send the peace among all nations especially in Lebanon.

St. Matthias, First Century Apostle, May 16th

According to the Acts of the Apostles, St. Matthias was chosen to replace Judas Iscariot as one of the twelve apostles after the resurrection of Jesus.

Two men, Barsabbas and Matthias, were proposed, but only one was selected. A companion of Christ during his public ministry, Matthias was among the seventy-two disciples whom Jesus sent out to preach.

He was also a witness to Christ’s resurrection. Tradition says that he preached the Gospel in Judea, Cappadocia, and near the Caspian Sea. He suffered martyrdom by crucifixion at Colchis.

St. Nehmetallah Hardini, May 16th

Joseph Kassab was born in the year 1808. His father was George Kassab and his mother Mariam Raad. He entered the school of the monks of St. Anthony at Hboub from 1816 to 1822.

He entered the monastery of St. Anthony of Kozhaya and became a novice, November 1828. There he adopted the name of Nehmetallah Kassab Hardini and learned to bind books. He professed his first vow on the 14th of November 1830.

After he finished his theological studies, he was ordained a priest under Bishop Semaan Zouein in the monastery of Kfifan on December 25th, 1833. He became a member of the general council three times from 1845 to 1848, 1850 to 1853. He taught in monastic schools.

One of his students was St. Charbel. Father Nehmetallah lived a very holy life. He was a man of prayer, totally “enraptured by God.” St. Nehmetallah died in the monastery of Kfifan on December 14, 1858 after struggling ten days with a high fever. He was fifty years of age.

He died holding a picture of the Virgin Mary. His last words were: “O Virgin Mary, in your hands I submit my soul.” Through his intercession many cures occurred: blind, paralyzed, child raised from the dead, cancer and nerve system. He was canonized on May 16th, 2004 in Rome by His All Holiness Pope John Paul II.

Mother’s Day Poem

Another Mother’s Day is here, bringing joy and pleasures new, on this special day, Mother dear, I want to remember you.

I cannot give you costly gifts, and I’ve told you this before, no matter what I give to you, you give back much, much more.

I’m giving you a pure, sweet rose, gathered in the early morn,

This rose you planted in my heart, the day that I was born.

In kindly, loving thoughts of you, and wit the faith you still impart, the rose I give to you today, is the love that’s in my heart.
