Seventh Sunday of the Easter Season May 4th, 2008

Gospel: John 13: 31 – 35

Readings: Ephesians 1: 15 – 23

Today’s reading from the Acts of the Apostles focuses on the faith, love and hope, the most precious gift from God through Jesus the risen Lord of the universe who is seated on the right hand of the Father.

This is an invitation to the Christian unity and the new life in Christ through continuous prayers and courage in the Gospel mission.

The commandment to love one another even the enemies as Jesus had taught us to do through his life, death and Resurrection, is the symbol of time.

God’s unconditional love is the conclusion of Jesus’ public life. It is manifested like the grain of wheat that dies to give abundantly. By his ascension, Jesus drew many to follow God’s glory leaving behind their earthly glory. God’s love is not chained or limited. It is the fountain of love.

Our Lady of Lebanon, May 6th

Our Lady of Lebanon is the Patron of the Mediterranean country of Lebanon. At the end of the 19th century, a 15 ton bronze statue of the Virgin Mary, painted in white, was erected on top of a hill, 650 meters above sea level, in the village of Harissa, north of Beirut in honour of Our Lady of Lebanon. The shrine was inaugurated in 1908, and since then it has become a major pilgrimage destination in Lebanon. The Lebanese Christians as well as the Druze and Shia Muslims have a special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Maronite of Antioch named her the “Queen of Lebanon” in 1908 upon completion of the Shrine. Pope John Paul II visited the shrine when he made an official visit to Lebanon on May 10, 1997. He conducted a Mass in the modern Basilica.

Our Lady of Lebanon, pray for us.

… And Mary replied:

“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour for he has looked with favour on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed; the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm, he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he has remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children forever.”
