Sunday of the Blind Man March 9th, 2008

Gospel: Mark 10: 46 – 52

Readings: 2 Corinthians 10: 1 – 7

Healing the blind man is one of the signs of the close coming of the kingdom according to Isaiah. Jesus reminded them of that in the synagogue in Nazareth, and when he sent the answer to John the Baptist with the disciples.

This miracle is very significant in Mark’s Gospel because it comes after the sons of Zebedee, who couldn’t see the Messiah, ask for a special place for themselves in heaven. On the way to Jerusalem, everyone recognizes his blindness towards Jesus’ secret.

They sternly ordered the blind man to be quiet, fearing that his cry would stop or delay their arrival to Jerusalem. Jesus stopped and called him in the same way he calls everyone to walk with him on the path of salvation.

Jesus asks them constantly: “What do you want me to do for you?” For this reason Jesus tried many times to deliver them from the temptation of victory and authority that controlled their senses. He guided them to enter in the sacrament of salvation. Jesus invites us to walk with him.

Prayer for Lent

Look upon me and hear my prayer during this holy season of Lent.

By the good works you inspire, help me to disciple my body and to be renewed in spirit.

Without you I can do nothing. By your Spirit help me to know what is right and to be eager in doing your will. Teach me to find new life through penance. Keep me from sin, and help me live by your commandment of love. God of love, bring me back to you. Send your Spirit to make me strong in faith and active in good works. May my acts of penance bring me your forgiveness , open my heart to your love, and prepare me for the coming feast of the Resurrection of Jesus. Amen.
