Father’s Day History
Sonora Dodd, of Washington, first had the idea of “Father’s Day”.
She thought of the idea for Father’s Day while listening to a
Mother’s Day Sermon in 1909. Sonora wanted a special day to honour
her father, William Smart. Smart, who was a Civil War Veteran, was
widowed when his wife died while giving birth to their sixth child.
Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children
by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington State. After Sonora
became an adult she realized the selflessness her father had shown
in raising his children as a single parent.
It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in
the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man.
Sonora’s father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first
Father’s Day Celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th
of June 1910.
President Calvin Coolidge, in 1924, supported the idea of a national
Father’s Day. Then in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a
presidential proclamation during the 3rd Sunday of June
as Father’s Day. President Richard Nixon signed the law which
finally made it permanent in 1972.
St. Jude, Patron Saint of Desperate Cases, June 19
St. Jude, known as Thaddaesus, was a brother of St. James the Less,
and a relative of our Saviour. St. Jude was one of the twelve
apostles of Jesus. Ancient writers tell us that he preached the
Gospel in Judea, Samaria, Idumaea, Syria, Mesopotamia and Libya.
According to Eusebius, he returned to Jerusalem in the year 62, and
assisted at the election of his brother, St. Simeon, as Bishop of
Jerusalem.
He is an author of an epistle to the Churches of the East,
particularly the Jewish converts. This apostle is said to have
suffered martyrdom in Armenia, which was then subject to Persia.
Jude was the one who asked Jesus at the Last Supper why He would not
manifest Himself to the whole world after his Resurrection. Little
else is known of his life. Legend claims that he visited Beirut and
Edessa; possibly martyred with Saint Simon in Persia.
Jude is invoked in desperate situations because his New Testament
letter stresses that the faithful should persevere in the
environment of harsh, difficult circumstances, just as their
forefathers had done before them.
Therefore he is the patron saint of desperate cases and his feast is
on June 19th. Saint Jude is not the same person as Judas
Iscariot who betrayed our Lord and despaired because of his great
sin and lack of trust in God’s mercy.
Father’s Day Prayer
God our Father,
In your wisdom and love you made all things.
Bless these men,
That they may be strengthened as Christian fathers.
Let the example of their faith and love shine forth.
Grant that we their sons and daughters,
May honour them always with a spirit of profound respect.
Grant this through Christ our Lord. |
