Tenth Sunday of the Pentecost Season July 13th, 2008

Gospel: Matthew 12: 22 – 32

Readings: 2 Corinthians 12: 1 – 11

The healing of the blind and mute is an ordinary occasion that created a wide controversy. Matthew takes us to the miracle in one verse.

The text is a meeting with Jesus, followed by a small conversion and a long argument between Jesus and the Pharisees.

The basic healing changed the life of the sick, astonished the crowd, created questions and caused us to learn about God. The deeds give the words their value. People are asking about Jesus’ identity; this is very valuable in itself.

It led to questions about the one who performed it. Everyone understands that the salvation is near.

They started to doubt that Jesus is the one they have been waiting for. To be satisfied with the miracles and ignoring Jesus and his identity is dangerous to the faithful. The miracle is only a way to reach the Saviour.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel, July 16

The Prophet Elijah ascended Mount Carmel to pray for the heavens to open when the country around him was dry and without water. Finally, he saw a small cloud coming in from the sea bearing life-giving rain.

In the twelfth century, Christian hermits came to live and pray on this mountain. In their vision, the cloud was a symbol of Mary, the Mother of God, who brought life to a parched world.

They honoured her under the title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and later founded an order devoted to prayer under her patronage.

Most beautiful Mother of God, Splendour of heaven, you bring fruitfulness to the earth and assist us in our needs.

Star of the Sea, show yourself a mother to me. Let the rain of your comfort fall gently upon me. Hear my voice when I call. Mother of God, I place my cause in your hands. Amen.

“Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.”
