Fourth Sunday of the Pentecost Season June 1st, 2008

Gospel: Luke 10: 21 – 24

Readings: 1 Corinthians 2: 11 - 16

Jesus invited us in this Sunday’s Gospel to be his disciples and to be like him pure at heart, unlike the Pharisees. He rejoiced in the Spirit and gave thanks to his Father.

The wisdom that came from the Holy Spirit, was designed by God since the beginning, and was realized in time through his Son Jesus for the salvation of those faithful to him.

He gave the Spirit to his disciples. He allowed us to share in his wisdom and his knowledge. In today’s Gospel Jesus explains the unique relationship between him and the Father.

He also talked about the reciprocal relationship between them. Jesus asks us to resemble little children in their innocence. Let us surrender to the Spirit and understand God’s inspiration.

St. Ephrem, June 9th

St. Ephrem was born at Nisibis, Mesopotamian in 306, he was baptized at the age of eighteen and became a companion of the Bishop of Nisibis, St. James.

It is thought that he might have accompanied James to the Council of Nicaea in 325. Nisibis was handed over to the Persians by Emperor Jovian in 363. Ephrem left immediately and retreated to a cave in the mountains overlooking Edessa.

A poet and hymn writer, he wrote many hymns while in Edessa. He gave the Church of his day many compositions of its liturgy and devotion.

He was known as “the Harp of the Holy Spirit”. Ephrem was revered by other by other great saints, such as St. Jerome, for his deep faith and wisdom. In 370, he went to Caesarea to visit St. Basil. Weakened by his many labours, he died at Edessa in 373, He is a Doctor of the Church.

Prayer of St. Ephrem

Lord Jesus Christ, King of kings, you have power over life and death. You know what is secret and hidden, and neither our thoughts nor our feelings are concealed from You. Cure me of duplicity; I have done evil before you.

Now my life declines from day to day and my sins increase.

O Lord, God of souls and bodies,

You know the extreme frailty of my soul and my flesh.

Grant me strength in my weakness, O Lord, and sustain me in my misery.

Give me a grateful soul that I may never cease to recall your benefits, O Lord most bountiful.

Be not mindful of my many sins, but forgive me all my misdeeds. O Lord, disdain not my prayer, the prayer of a wretched sinner; sustain me with your grace until the end, that it may protect me as in the past. You have been my help and my protection. May the name of your majesty be praised forever. To you, our God, be glory. Amen.
