Ninth Sunday of the Pentecost Season July 6th, 2008

Gospel: Matthew 11: 1 – 6

Readings: 2 Corinthians 5: 20, 6: 10

Jesus’ mission, which he started and completed between Galilee & Jerusalem, where he died and was raised.

This program affected the Jews and the pagan people, beginning with the baptism when the Holy Spirit declared that Jesus is the Son of the Lord, to the devils’ trials which he conquered, to his mission of preaching the kingdom of God.

By Jesus’ death on the Cross and becoming a sacrifice, he triumphed over the sin and stopped the sacrifices of the Old Testament. For this reason, we should benefit from the remaining time for repentance.

The apostolic mission is one with the personality of the apostle and his service. The apostle is inspired by God. He preaches according to the flesh but a proof of God’s glory according to the eye of faith in Jesus the Crucified.

Jesus taught in Nazareth and in Jerusalem before his passion, death and resurrection. He preached to his followers and his family. He endured the Cross. He was obedient and merciful.

St. Maria Goretti, July 6th

St. Maria Goretti was born at Corinaldo, Italy, in 1892m into a poor family of farm labourers. Her father, Luigi, moved the family to Ferreiri di Conca, not far from Nettuno in the Roman Campagna. Luigi Goretti died in 1896, and his wife had to work hard in the fields to support the family of six children.

On July 5, 1902 Maria was attacked in her home by eighteen-year-old Alexander Serenelli. Alexander was the son of her father’s partner and lived in the Goretti’s house. Maria, not quite twelve years old, was dragged into one of the bedrooms by Alexander.

She resisted his advances and was stabbed repeatedly with a long dagger. Maria was rushed to the hospital, and as she lay dying, she prayed that Alexander would be forgiven and her family would be provided for.

On July 6th, 1902, after receiving viaticum, she died in the presence of her mother, two nuns, the parish priest of Nettuno, and a Spanish noblewoman.

Her death profoundly moved the people of Italy and stirred worldwide notice. Alexander was sentenced to thirty years in prison, and remained unrepentant. One night, however, he had a dream of Maria gathering flowers and offering them to him.

He became a changed man and was released from prison after twenty-seven years because of good conduct. Alexander Serenelli was alive when Maria was canonized on July 25th, 1950 by Pope Pius XII.

Lord God,

Give us strength to do what is right no matter what the cost.

Prayer before Communion

Jesus, my God, You are infinitely good and perfect. I love You above all things and with my whole heart.

I desire to receive You in Holy Communion, that I may love You more and serve You better. Come to me and strengthen me, so that I may never be separated from You on earth and that I may live with You eternally in heaven. Amen.
