Sunday of the Faithfully Departed January 27th, 2008

Gospel: Luke 16:19 – 31
Readings: 1 Thessalonians 5: 1 – 11

Today’s Gospel describes the life of Lazarus who was a poor man. This Gospel is a proof of God’s kept promises, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”

This Gospel is an example of God’s love for the poor. God chose the poor to share in his glory. The Gospel does not mention the bad habits of the rich but it mentions that he did not listen to Moses and the prophets.

He did not know how to live the present without ignoring the eternal life. The only sin that the rich man committed was not sharing his wealth with the poor and the needy. The wealthy man did not abuse or humiliate Lazarus but at the same time, he did not do anything to help ease his pain or hunger.

A true Christian is not a person who doesn’t do evil, but a person who does good deeds. The conclusion of the text is a declaration that the living has “Moses and the prophets.” This will confirm the seriousness of the divine inspiration through the scriptures. People don’t have to wait for miracles to believe and repent.

The announcement is in our midst. We hear it on our paths of human life. It warns us to love God and our neighbours as ourselves.

As we remember the faithfully departed, the Church reminds us through the letter to the Thessalonians that death comes suddenly without a warning. We have to be prepared by hearing the word of God and living by it.

Presentation of Jesus, February 2nd

Forty days after his birth, Jesus was presented in the temple by Mary and Joseph to fulfill Jewish law. There he was recognized by Simeon and Anna, who were waiting for the coming Messiah.

St. Luke reports the event: “When the day came to purify them according to the law of Moses, the couple brought Jesus up to Jerusalem so that he could be presented to the Lord, for it is written in the law of the Lord, ‘Every first-born male shall be consecrated to the Lord.’

They came to offer in sacrifice a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons, in accord with the dictate in the law of the Lord. They lived in Jerusalem at the time as a certain man named Simeon.

He was just and pious, and awaited the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit that he would not experience death until he had seen the Anointed of the Lord.

He came to the temple now, inspired by the Spirit; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform for him the customary ritual of the law, the took him in his arms and blessed God in these words: ‘Now, Master, you can dismiss your servant in peace; you have fulfilled your word.

For my eyes have witnessed your saving deed displayed for all the peoples to see: A revealing light to the gentiles, the glory of your people Israel.”’

This feast, celebrated by the Christian Churches of East and West at an early date, has also been called “Candlemas Day” because candles are blessed and lighted this day on which Simeon called Jesus “a light to the Gentiles.’

Prayer After Mass

Soul of Christ, make me holy. Body of Christ, save me.

Blood of Christ, fill me with love.

Water from Christ’s side, wash me.

Passion of Christ, strengthen me. Good Jesus hear me.

Within your wounds, hide me. Never let me be parted from you. From the evil enemy, protect me.

At the hour of my death, call me, and tell me to come to you with your saints I may praise you through all eternity. Amen.
