Sunday of the Priests

Gospel: Luke 12:42 – 48
Readings: 1 Timothy 4: 6 – 16

“Who then is the faithful and prudent manager?” He is the one who knows that the Master is coming undoubtedly. He is the one who also knows that what he does now will be questioned later by the Master.

The honor of the servant depends on the way he performs his duties, “Blessed is that slave whom his master will find at work when he arrives.”

The prudent servant is the one who lives and acts according to the knowledge that his Master is coming so he changes his daily human behavior. The prudent servant is the one who keeps watch during the night so the coming of the Master won’t surprise him. Instead it will man for him that the promise of the Lord is going to be done as promised.

We are drowning in the earthly materialism that covers us in a way that makes us forget and consequently become unable to see eternity. We are facing the danger of letting ourselves go into the flow of money, authority, power and desire.

God is inviting us to fight against the theory of “being powerful is having authority.” The Master who is absent now will come soon. The power and wealth won’t help us then. These were the teachings of St. Paul to his disciple Timothy.

The way of service requires patience and courage to get oneself used to righteousness and to execute God’s will in our lives.

St. Anthony, Abbot, January 17th

St. Anthony was born in the village of Koman, Upper Egypt in 250. He was born into a wealthy Christian family, and when his parents died in 269, he and his sisters were left alone.

About six months after his parents’ death, while in Church, he heard the words of the Gospel, “If you want to be perfect, go sell all you have, and give it to the poor; and come, follow me and you will have a treasure in heaven.”

Anthony felt as if God was speaking directly to him. He immediately left the Church and gave all his property to the poor people of his village.

Then, after providing for his sister, he left home to follow Christ. He chose to live in a deserted place not far from Koman, where he devoted himself to prayer and work with his hands. About 285, Anthony moved and settled on the top of a mountain where he lived in solitude for nearly twenty years.

The devil continually tempted him, but he became a stronger person. About 305, Anthony came down from the mountain and established the first Christian monastery in Fayum. In 312, he returned to a cave on Mount Kolzim with his disciple, Macarius, and remained there for the rest of his life.

People from all over Egypt and throughout the world heard of this holy man living in the desert. Some adopted his life style and many became monks. He is called the Father of Monasticism.

Prayer for Priests

Keep them, I pray thee, dearest Lord, keep them, for they are thine. Thy priests whose lives burn out before thy consecrated shrine.

Keep them, for they are in the world. Though from the world apart; when earthly pleasures tempt, allure, shelter them in thy heart.

Keep them, and comfort them in hours of loneliness and pain, when all their life of sacrifice for souls seems but in vain.

Keep them as spotless as the Host, that daily they caress; their every thought and word and deed, deign, dearest Lord, to bless.
