New Year’s 2008
Gospel: John 14:27 – 31
Readings: Ephesians 2:1 – 22 “… A family lives in peace if all its members submit to a common standard: that is what prevents selfish individualism and brings individuals together, fostering their harmonious coexistence and giving directions to their work.
This principle, obvious as it is, also holds true for wider communities: from local and national communities to the international community itself.
For the sake of peace, a common law is needed, one which would foster true freedom rather than blind caprice, and protect the weak from oppression by the strong.
The family of peoples experiences many cases of arbitrary conduct, both within individual states and in the relations of states among themselves. In many situations the weak must bow not to the demands of justice, but to the naked power of those stronger than themselves.
It bears repeating: power must always be disciplined by law, and this applies also to relations between sovereign states.”

Epiphany of the Lord: We celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord on Sunday, January 6th. The water will be blessed during both Masses at 9:30 & 11:00AM. Please bring a container for Holy Water. All are welcome.
Office Closed: The Office will be closed on Tuesday & Wednesday January 1st & 2nd and will reopen on Thursday, January 3rd. Have a Blessed Holiday Season.

- Jan. 26th, 2008: St. Anthony’s KC 13797 3rd Annual Banquet at Lebanese Club. Cocktails at 6PM, Dinner at 7PM. Tickets are $28/person ($ 15 kids under 12). There will be DJ entertainment, raffles and door prizes. Further details to follow. Keep this date open on your calendar. Everyone is welcome.

تذكار القديس بولا أوّل النسّاك، 5 كانون الثاني
وُلِدَ بولا في مدينة ثيبة في مصر السُفلى، من عيلةٍ قبطية مسيحية. درس اللّغتَين اليونانية والمصرية وبرع فيهما. وتوفّيَ والداه وهو ابن خمس عشرة سنة تاركين له ثروة وافرة، لكنَّ قلبه كانَ توّاقاً إلى غير المال. وأثارَ داكيوس قيصر الاضطهاد على النصارى، فذهبَ بولا واختبأ في بستانٍ له على ضفاف النيل، ولمّا شعر أنّ صهره يريد أو يوشي به طمعاً بميراثه، حزنَ لتلك الخيانة الفظيعة، وتركَ عزلته وماله وشقيقته، وسار إلى برّية تيبايس فتنسّكَ هناك، يقتات من ثمر النخل ويكتسي بأوراقه، عائشاً على الأرض مثل ملاكٍ في السماء، إلى أن بلغَ من العمر مئة وثلاث عشرة سنة. فأوحى الله إلى أنطونيوس في الحلم أنّ بولا الناسك أقدم منه وأكثر قداسة. فسارَ يطوف تلك الفلوات حتّى عثر على مغارة بولا. فتعانقا كأنّهما صديقان من زمنٍ بعيد. ويُروى أنّ غُراباً جاءهما برغيف خبز. فقالَ بولا: "تبارك الله الذي أرسلَ لنا كفافنا! إنّ هذا الغراب يأتيني منذ ستين سنة، كلّ يوم بنصف رغيف، واليوم، لأجلِكَ أتاني برغيفٍ كامل." وصرفا اللّيل كلّه بتلاوة المزامير وتسبيح الله. وفي الغد قال بولا لأنطونيوس: قد دنا أجلي فأرسلكَ الله إليّ لتدفن جسدي وتُرجع التراب إلى التراب. فأسألك أن تذهب وتأتيني بالرداء الذي وهبك إيّاه البطريرك اثناسيوس وتجعله كفناً لي بعد موتي. فذهب أنطونيوس ليأتيه بالرداء. ولمّا عادَ إليه بالمطلوب وجده ميتاً. فكفّنه برداء البطريرك ودفنه. ثمّ رجعَ متزوّداً ثوب بولا الذي نسجه بيديه من ورق النخل. وكان يلبسه أنطونيوس في عيد الفصح وعيد العنصرة، تبرّكاً منه. وقد قصَّ على رهبانه كلّ ما جرى بينه وبين القديس بولا والذي كانت وفاه سنة 343. صلاته معنا آمين.
