Sunday of the Prodigal Son February 24th, 2008

Gospel: Luke 15 :11 – 32
Readings: 2 Corinthians 13: 5 – 13

Some might think that today’s text is the center of St. Luke’s Gospel, preceded by that of the lost sheep and the lost penny.

These are normal situations that could happen to anyone everyday. The importance of the two parables comes from Jesus’ educational opinion “I say to you: the angels will rejoice when a sinner repents.”

This explanation gives the three parables great significance because it explains the value of the sinner in God’s eyes. Jesus continues to show “The Forgiving Father” before the tax collectors and the sinners. That father doesn’t deny his son’s right to a private life.

Once the son starts to spend wildly, he wears the form of the sinner and throws away all the values and follows the sin. After losing everything he gets a job similar to his financial situation. The son will decide to go back to give a meaning to his life. The reality is different.

Prayer to the Holy Guardian Angel

O holy, loving and guide, watch over us with all the tenderness of your angelic heart. Keep us always on the way that leads to heaven, and cease not to pray for us until we have attained our final destination, eternal salvation. Then we shall love you for all eternity.

We shall praise and glorify you unceasingly for all the good you have done for us while here on earth. Especially be a faithful and watchful protector of our children. Take our place, and supply what may we be wanting to us through human frailty, short-sightedness, or sinful neglect.

Lighten, O perfect servants of God, our heavy task. Guide our children that they may become like unto Jesus, may imitate Him faithfully, and persevere till they attain eternal life. Amen.
