Sunday of the Hemorrhaging Woman February 17th, 2008

Gospel: Luke 8 :4 – 56
Readings: 2 Corinthians 7: 4 – 11

The illness of the Hemorrhaging woman is personal. She suffers from it by herself. It is not obvious to others. She keeps thinking about a solution for her condition, which is not known and does not put others at risk.

Jesus’ passage where “they were waiting for him” was for her a new chance to be healed. She approached him with faith and touched him asking for a healing.

The divinity of the Savior protects everyone according to his need, unlike Peter who was taken by the crowd. For this reason Jesus answered the hemorrhaging woman who asked to be cured in her heart. The contact is an important factor in the healing. She felt the power that restored her back to health.

We have to get close to the Lord to feel his presence. Jesus’ reaction is educational. He wanted to show that faith is the reason for the healing. Jesus wants to have faith not to use it to be cured. Our personal experience with the Lord should reflect the true love of God for his children.

Chair of St. Peter, Apostle, February 22

In ancient Rome, families remembered their dead relatives and friends at a feast during the latter part of February in which an empty chair represented their deceased.

Since the early Christians did not know the date of St. Peter’s death, they remembered him with a feast around his empty chair on February 22. Later, the Church would see the Chair of St. Peter as a symbol of his authority as the first Bishop of both Rome and Antioch.

It was to Peter that Jesus said, “I have prayed for you, Peter, that your faith may not fail; and when you have turned to me, you must strengthen the faith of your brothers and sisters.”

Father, you have built your Church on Peter’s confession of faith. May nothing weaken your gift of faith and love.

Prayer for Peace

Blessed are the PEACEMAKERS, for they shall be known as the children of God.

Jesus gave us a way to live in peace: love your enemies, and do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you and pray for those who abuse you.

And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them. Amen.
