Sixth Sunday of the Easter Season April 27th, 2008

Gospel: Luke 24: 36 – 48

Readings: Romans 10: 1 – 13

The disciples did not recognize Jesus, the Risen Lord. They did not believe that Jesus the crucified was going to rise from the dead.

Jesus had to prove for them that he was alive using material evidence; showing them the wounds marks in his hands and feet, he ate with them and reminded them of his teachings when he was with them.

He also explained for them the prophecies and psalms. He promised them he would send his Spirit to help them. Then, they believed.

The main focus of the sixth Sunday of Easter is the disciples’ experience of Jesus’ glorious presence among them. Jesus opened the disciples’ hearts and made them understand the word incarnate through the three years of his teachings.

St. Philip and St. James, May 3rd (First Century Apostles)

St. Philip was born at Bethsaida in Galilee. He was one of the apostles and a disciple of John the Baptist. Philip heard the call of Jesus, “Follow me,” and accompanied Jesus on his public ministry.

He is mentioned in St. John’s Gospel, and invited the apostle, Barholomew, to come and see Christ. At the Last Supper he said to Jesus, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough.” According to tradition, Philip was present with the apostles who spent ten days waiting in the upper room in Jerusalem for the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

After the death of Christ, Philip preached the Gospel in Phrygia, Asia Minor. He was martyred at Hierapolis by soldiers loyal to Emperor Domitian. St. James, also known as James the Less, was one of the twelve apostles and is called “the son of Alpheus” and “the brother of the Lord” in the Gospels.

It is assumed that he was most likely a cousin of Jesus. He is believed to be the author of St. James in the New Testament. James was appointed the Bishop of Jerusalem and was present at the Council of Jerusalem.

He was also present with the apostles in the upper room awaiting the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. James remained in Jerusalem after Pentecost and was stoned to death there in 62.

The Ascension of the Lord

The story of the Ascension of the Lord, celebrated as of the twelve great feasts of the Church, is found in the book of the Acts of the Apostles.

The moment of the Ascension is told in one sentence: “He was lifted up before their eyes in a cloud which took Him from their sight.” Christ made his last appearance on earth, forty days after his Resurrection from the dead.

The Acts of the Apostles states that the disciples were in Jerusalem. Jesus appeared before them and commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the “Promise of the Father.”

He stated, “You shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” After he led them to the Mount of Olives, he commissioned them to be his witnesses. As the disciples watched, Jesus lifted up his hands, blessed them, and then was taken up out of their sight.

St. Joseph the Worker, May 1st

On May 1st, 1955, Pope Pius XII addressed the Catholic Association of Italian Workers and declared that this day would be known as the feast day of St. Joseph the Worker.

In the Communist bloc, May 1st is celebrated as May Day, which glorifies the relationship between the worker and the socialist state.

It is obvious that the Church was very concerned with this, and wanted to demonstrate to its faithful that it was equally concerned about the plight of the working man and woman, Joseph, a carpenter, taught his trade to his son, Jesus, and provided for his family.

It is especially important to remember this human element when contemplating the lives of both St. Joseph and the Holy Family.

Lord God, maker of all things,

You give us skill of mind and body to labour and serve in this world.

May we follow the way of St. Joseph who worked with Christ as his side.

May we all do be a sign of your greatness and power.
