Fourth Sunday of the Easter Season April 13th, 2008

Gospel: John 21: 1 – 14

Readings: Hebrews 13: 18 – 25

This Sunday reminds us of the apparition of Jesus to seven of his disciples by the Sea of Tiberias. The miraculous fishing symbolizes the fishing of people at the hand of the disciples.

The net is a symbol of the Church which has to gather in the risen Lord all the people of the earth, to give them the salvation. Jesus is the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant. He makes us complete in everything good so that we may do God’s will.

We are committed through Jesus to complete the will of God and to live according to his laws. He seven disciples did not catch any fish. It seems like the mission of casting the net to fish has been completed and that of fishing people to the salvation has started. Jesus took the initiative in the miraculous fishing.

Today, Jesus is present with us. He is risen. They recognized him from the abundance of the fish and their net that did not tear. The beloved disciple was the first one to recognize him. By taking the bread and giving it to them in communion, Jesus clearly indicated the Holy Eucharist, through which we meet Jesus, the Risen Lord present with us until the end of days.

St. Martin I, April 13

St. Martin I was born in Italy. Pope Theodore I died in 649 and Martin was elected to succeed him. As Bishop of Rome, he staunchly defended the Catholic Faith against the heresy of Monotheistic, which denied that Christ had both a human and a divine will.

Son after his election, Martin convened a council at the Lateran and condemned Monotheistic, its leaders, especially Byzantine Emperor Constans II, and two imperial decrees supporting the heresy. Upon hearing this, Constans became enraged and demanded that Martin be brought before him in Constantinople. Constans then sent Theodore Calliopas and his troops to Rome. Martin was captured, brought back to Constantinople and imprisoned in 653. While in prison, he was subjected to many indignities and tortured unmercifully.

After three months, Martin was condemned to death and sent back to prison. His life was spared by the Patriarch of Constantinople, but Martin was exiled to the Crimea where he died in 656.

The Lord himself will care for this poor body of mine according to his providence, whether I suffer much or have some consolation. Why am I anxious? The Lord is near.

Our Lord Jesus loves us:

“I leave you now with this prayer: that the Lord Jesus will reveal Himself to each one of you, that He will give you the strength to go out and profess that you are Christian, that He will show that He alone can fill your hearts.

Accept His freedom and embrace His truth, and be messengers of the certainty that you have been truly liberated through the death and Resurrection of the Lord Jesus. This will be the new experience, the powerful experience, that will generate, through you, a more just society and a better word. God bless you and may the joy of Jesus be always with you!”

                          Pope John Paul II
