Gospel: Matthew 24: 1 – 14

Readings: 1 Corinthians 15: 1 9 – 34

This Sunday we hear a text from the Gospel of Matthew. This text frightens the human beings and makes them question the natural disasters which occurred in the past and are happening in the present. Matthew shows us how Jesus opened the kingdom of heaven with his death and resurrection.

The Church’s role is to make all humanity participate in the kingdom prepared for them. The disciples asked Jesus a series of questions: when will the destruction of Jerusalem be? What will be the sign of the coming of the Son of Man and of the end of the age? They considered all these incidents connected one to another.

We know as Matthew knew the day he wrote the Gospel that Jerusalem and its temple have been destroyed, the end is not yet. The coming of the Son of Man in his glory declares the end of the history.

Matthew tells us that the judgment won’t happen at the end of the age but every minute of our daily lives and that the Son of Man is standing near by to encourage us to be patient, courageous and to stay alert: “Keep awake therefore.”

St. Cosmas & St. Damian, Martyrs, September 26

According to tradition, Sts. Cosmas & Damian were twin brothers born in Arabia. They were doctors who lived at Aegeae, Cilicia, and ministered to the sick. Because they would not accept money for their services, they became known as “the holy moneyless ones.” They were arrested during the persecution of Christians under Emperor Diocletian. They were tried by Lysias, governor of Cilicia, tortured and beheaded in 303. They are buried at Cyrrhus, Syria, and many people have been cured after praying at their shrine.

Lord, cure the sick and suffering, comfort those in pain.

Prayer

O God, to turn from you is to fall, to turn to you is to rise,

And to stand to you is to rise,

And to stand with you is to abide forever.

Grant us help in all we do, guidance in all our confusion, protection in all our dangers,

And a place in all our sorrows; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

                                                                                                                       “St. Augustine.”
