Sixth Sunday after the Holy Cross

Gospel: Matthew 25: 14 – 30

Readings: Galatians 6: 1- 10

We continue to live with the Church the time of the Holy Cross which indicates the end of age and the second coming. This time strongly suggests that we need to be awake and be ready for the Lord’s coming. Jesus gave us the talents and the authority.

Today, through the talents, we see him entrusting his money to the slaves. This gesture puts the faithful in the position of responsibility.

The money is not theirs. The Lord knows the capacity of each one of them. He divided the talents between them according to their capacities and set out on his journey.

This was an invitation to work for the second life. The faithful can live the happiness of that life starting here on earth. This was an invitation to work for the second life.

The faithful can live the happiness of that life starting here on earth.

If the talents were a direct invitation to work, it is also an indirect call to accept the others. If all people were alike, we wouldn’t need each other and brotherly love wouldn’t exist.

St. Simon & St. Jude, Apostles (October 27)

Little is known of Sts. Simon & Jude except that they were chosen by Jesus as apostles and appear well down on the list of the twelve. They do not figure prominently in the Gospel stories, as do some other apostles.

After Jesus’ Ascension there is no reliable account of what happened to them. Stories of their founding the Church in Syria and Egypt are groundless. Simon and Jude appear to have done little in their lives that was notable.

Yet the Church celebrates them among her founders, seeing their preaching revealing God to us and their prayers aiding her growth. The apostles were not all of one mould. Some, like Peter and Paul, were active public figures immersed in the controversy and changing movements of their time.

Others, perhaps like Simon and Jude, may have taken a quieter path. Yet their voices too have been heard through all the earth. Not only brilliant, active, and achieving apostles communicate the faith. Some, also apostles, may pass on this treasure in simpler, unnoticed ways: ordinary sowers, they cast the seed of faith undramatically on a world waiting for harvest.

Lord,

May we follow and serve you.

Prayer for the Sick

Dear Jesus, Divine Physician and Healer of the sick, we turn to you in this time of illness. O dearest comforter of the troubled, alleviate our worry and sorrow with your gentle love, and grant us the grace and strength to accept this burden.

Dear God, we place our worries in your hands. We place our sick under your care and humbly ask that you restore your servant to health again. Above all, grant us the grace to acknowledge your will and know that whatever you do, you do for the love of us. Amen.

Daylight Saving Time comes to an end in Canada on the last Sunday of October, this year October 28th. Remember to turn your clocks back by one hour.
