Sunday of the Renewal of the Church

Gospel: John 10: 22 – 42

Readings: Hebrews 9: 11 –15

The conversation between Jesus and the Jews evolves around two nicknames: the Messiah and the Son of God. The Jews asked Jesus if he was the Messiah. They didn’t want to know Jesus’ identity but they were trying to make him admit it and then sentence him.

Jesus’ answer wasn’t clear but had a hidden confession about his identity: “I told you and you don’t believe.” Jesus focuses in his conversation on the nickname “Son of God” using the miracles he performed (healing the paralyzed and the blind and the rising of Lazarus from the dead)

Jesus used the books as references because he knows that the Jews accept the books as proof. He used the psalm that says: “I said you are gods.” He called the judges gods because the Lord’s word was given to them by inspiration.

The judges represent God on earth. Jesus could be called the Son of God because he was sent by God into the world. Jesus unveiled his true identity to the Jews who were self-involved in their lack of faith. They are not of Jesus’ flock.

St. Matthew, November 16th

The call of St. Matthew, the tax collector, to be one of the twelve apostles of Jesus is described in the Gospel which bears his name.

“Jesus saw a man named Matthew at his post where taxes were collected. He said to him, ‘Follow me!’ And Matthew got up and followed him.’ It is hard to imagine a more unlikely person for Jesus to call as a companion than Matthew.

Tax collectors, as agents of a hated Roman government and members of a profession known for unfairness and greed, were despised by the Jewish people. They were excluded from the Synagogue and the temple.

No good Jews would have anything to do with them. When Jesus invited Matthew to follow him and then ate at his house where Matthew’s friends, outsiders like himself, were gathered, be heard the outraged comments of Capernaum’s local leaders.

“Why does eat with tax collectors and sinners?” Jesus answered simply, “Those who are well have no need of a doctor; sick people do.” By calling Matthew, Jesus invited an outcast to enjoy the healing friendship of God.

In a lesson of love, he showed that God wants all, no matter who they, to share his life. According to tradition, Matthew wrote down the stories and words of Jesus in Aramaic, the ancient language of Palestine.

The first Gospel had its origin in him. Among the evangelists he is symbolized by the figure of a man, because Matthew’s Gospel begins with the human origins of Jesus. There are reports that Matthew left Judea and preached in the East, where he was martyred in Ethiopia.

O God, may we follow your call.

Prayer for the Souls in Purgatory

Lord God Almighty, I beseech you by the precious body and blood of your divine Son Jesus, which he gave with his own hand upon the eve of his passion to his beloved apostles to be their food and drink, deliver the souls in purgatory, and especially that one which was most devoted to this mystery of infinite love, that, with your divine Son, and with your Holy Spirit, it may ever praise you for your wondrous love in your eternal glory. Amen.

(Our Father Hail Mary, and glory.)
