Dedication of the Church of St. John Lateran, November 9
The emperor Constantine, after ending three centuries of Church
persecution, gave the Lateran Palace in Rome for use as a Church in
324.
The Church was named for St. John the Baptist and St. John the
Evangelist. An early inscription describes this Church as “the
mother and head of all churches,” because here the Christians of
Rome were baptized.
The Popes resided next to this Church until the fourteenth century
when they moved their residence to the Vatican. The Catholic Church
has always revered its Churches as places of God’s grace. Its
people, “living stones, “temples of God,” gather for worship there.
God’s word is proclaimed, his sacraments are celebrated within the
Church walls. As we celebrate the dedication of certain Churches, we
recall the holiness of every Church as a house of prayer where God’s
love is at work preparing a family for the heavenly city of
Jerusalem. |
