Sunday of the Renewal of the Church

Gospel: Matthew 16: 13 – 20

Readings: Hebrews 9: 1 –12

“Who do people say that I am? Who do you say that I am?” This is a question with double meanings asked by Jesus. Jesus beatified Peter for the answer he gave.

Jesus cared about the people’s opinion in him. But this wasn’t an obstacle for his mission. This question opens for us new and wide horizons. It is very important to know what people think of us. We either continue in the path we took or we try to work at making ourselves worthy of being children of God.

“Who do YOU say that I am?” Peter’s answer came to him by an inspiration from above. Jesus beatified Peter and gave the keys to the kingdom of heaven. We, as community of faith, are invited to answer to that question about Jesus’ identity.

If we don’t know the answer, we know that the Church holds the keys of the kingdom of heaven, which is inside each and everyone of us according to the Lord.

Let us give ourselves to the Church to open our hearts and discover the true identity of Jesus. If we declare openly the Lord’s identity, we too, like Peter, can become the rock.

Dedication of the Church of St. John Lateran, November 9

The emperor Constantine, after ending three centuries of Church persecution, gave the Lateran Palace in Rome for use as a Church in 324.

The Church was named for St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist. An early inscription describes this Church as “the mother and head of all churches,” because here the Christians of Rome were baptized.

The Popes resided next to this Church until the fourteenth century when they moved their residence to the Vatican. The Catholic Church has always revered its Churches as places of God’s grace. Its people, “living stones, “temples of God,” gather for worship there.

God’s word is proclaimed, his sacraments are celebrated within the Church walls. As we celebrate the dedication of certain Churches, we recall the holiness of every Church as a house of prayer where God’s love is at work preparing a family for the heavenly city of Jerusalem.
