The
Visitation of Mary, May 31st
Celebrated
between the feasts of the Annunciation (March 25) and the Birth of
John he Baptist (June 24), the feast of the Visitation originated in
the Church of the Middle Ages. It recalls Mary’s visit to her
cousin, Elizabeth, after the angel announced that she was to be the
Mother of Jesus. Filled with the Holy Spirit, these two great women
recognized the power of God at work in their midst. “Blessed are you
among women.” Elizabeth said, “and blessed is the fruit of your
womb.” Mary replied:
My soul
proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my
Saviour for he has looked with favour on his lowly servant.
From this
day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done
great things from me, and holy is his name. He has mercy on those
who fear him in every generation.
He has
shown the strength of his arm, he has scattered the proud in their
conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has
lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and
the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come
to the help of his servant Israel for he has remembered his promise
of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his
children forever.
Prayer
for Enlightenment
O Holy
Spirit, divine Spirit of light and love, I consecrate to You my
understanding, my heart and my will, whole being for time an for
eternity.
May my
understanding be always obedient to your heavenly inspirations and
the teachings of the Holy Church, of which You are the infallible
guide. May my heart be ever inflamed with love of God and of my
neighbour; may my will be ever conformed to the divine will, and may
my whole life be a faithful following of the life and virtues of Our
Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, to whom with the Father and You be
honour and glory for ever. Amen. |
