St. Nehmetallah
Hardini, May 16th
Joseph Kassab
was born in the year 1808. His father was George Kassab and his
mother Mariam Raad. He entered the school of the monks of St.
Anthony at Hboub from 1816 to 1822.
He entered the
monastery of St. Anthony of Kozhaya and became a novice, November
1828. There he adopted the name of Fr. Nehmetallah Kassab Hardini
and learned to bind books. He professed his first vow on the 14th
of November 1830.
After he
finished his theological studies, he was ordained a priest under
Bishop Semaan Zouein in the monastery of Kfifan on December 25th,
1833. He became a member of the general council three times from
1845 to 1848, 1850 to 1853. He taught in monastic schools. One of
his students was St. Charbel. Father Nehmetallah lived a very holy
life. He was a man of prayer, totally “enraptured by God”.
St.
Nehmetallah died in the monastery of Kfifan on December 14, 1858
after struggling ten days with a high fever. He was fifty years of
age. He died holding a picture of the Virgin Mary.
His last words
were: “O Virgin Mary, in your hands I submit my soul.” Through his
intercession many cures occurred: Blind, paralyzed, child raised
from the dead, cancer and nerve system.
He was
canonized on May 16th, 2004 in Rome by Hi All Holiness
Pope John Paul II.
The Ascension
of The Lord
The story of
the Ascension of the Lord, celebrated as of the twelve great feasts
of the Church, is found in the book of the Acts of the Apostles. The
moment of the Ascension is told in one sentence: “He was lifted up
before their eyes in a cloud which took him from their sight.”
Christ made
his last appearance on earth, forty days after His Resurrection from
the dead. The Acts of the Apostles states that the disciples were in
Jerusalem.
Jesus appeared
before them and commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to
wait for the “Promise of the Father”. He stated, “You shall be
baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
After he led
them to the Mount of Olives, he commissioned them to be his
witnesses. As the disciples watched, Jesus lifted up His hands,
blessed them, and then was taken up out of their sight. |
