Our Lady of
Lebanon, May 6th
Our Lady of
Lebanon is the patron saint of the Mediterranean country of Lebanon.
A the end of the 19th Century, a 15 ton bronze statue of
the Virgin Mary, painted in white, was erected on top of a hill, 650
meters above sea level, in the village of Harissa, north of Beirut
in honour of Our Lady of Lebanon.
The shrine was
inaugurated in 1908, and since then it has become a major pilgrimage
destination in Lebanon. The Lebanese Christians as well as the Druze
and Shia Muslims have a special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The Maronite
Patriarch of Antioch named her the “Queen of Lebanon” in 1908 upon
completion of the shrine. Pope John Paul II visited the shrine when
he made an official visit to Lebanon on May 10, 1997. He conducted a
Mass in the modern Basilica.
Our Lady of Lebanon, pray for us.
Hail Holy Queen
Hail, Holy
Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To
thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve, to thee do we send up
our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn then,
most gracious Advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us, and after this
our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit on your womb, Jesus.
O clement, O
loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, that
we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen. |
