Sunday March 25th

Sunday of the Blind Man

Gospel: Mark 2: 46– 52

Readings: 2 Corinthians 10: 1 – 7

Healing the blind man is one of the signs of the close coming of the kingdom according to Isaiah. Jesus reminded them of that in the synagogue in Nazareth, and when he sent the answer to John the Baptist with the disciples.

This miracle is very significant in Mark’s Gospel because it comes after the sons of Zebedee, who couldn’t see the Messiah, ask for a special place for themselves in heaven. On the way to Jerusalem, everyone recognizes his blindness towards Jesus’ secret.

They sternly ordered the blind man to be quiet, fearing that his cry would stop or delay their arrival to Jerusalem. Jesus stopped and called him in the same way he calls everyone to walk with him on the path of salvation. Jesus asks them constantly: “What do you want me to do for you?”

For this reason Jesus tried many times to deliver them from the temptation of victory and authority that controlled their senses. He guided them to enter in the sacrament of salvation. Jesus invites us to walk with him.

St. Gabriel, March 26th

Holy Scripture speaks of angels as ministers of God in human affairs. St. Michael defended the honour of God against satan. St. Gabriel announced to Mary the coming of Jesus.

St. Raphael guided Tobias on his journey and brought healing to Tobit, his blind father. As servants of God, the angels are instruments of God’s hidden providence. They preserve us from harm, give God’s wisdom and strength to humanity, and accompany us on our journey through life.

We thank you, Lord with al our hearts; in the presence of your angels we bless you.

The Annunciations, March 26th

One of the “Christmas Feasts” celebrated outside the Christmas Season, the feast of the Annunciation recalls the coming of the Angel Gabriel to Mary at Nazareth to announce that she was to be the mother of Jesus. The Angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David.

The virgin’s name was Mary. Upon arriving, the angel said to her: “Rejoice, O highly favoured daughter! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women.” She was deeply troubled by his words, and wondered what his greeting meant. The angel went on to say to her: “Do not fear, Mary. You have found favour with God. You shall conceive and bear a son and give him the name Jesus. Great will be his dignity and he will be called Son of the Most High.

The Lord God will give him the throne of David his Father. He will rule over the house of Jacob forever and his reign will be without end.” Mary said, “I am the maidservant of the Lord. Let it be done to me as your say.” With that the angel left her.

The feast of the Annunciation is an ancient feast of the Church. March 25, the time of the spring equinox, was seen as a significant day by the early Christians who regarded it as the day the world was created, the day of Christ’s conception in Mary’s womb, and the day of his death on the Cross.

God our Father,

Your Word became man and was born of the Virgin Mary.

 Psalm 23

You, Lord, are my shepherd; I shall not want. In green meadows, you give me repose; beside restful waters you lead me; you refresh my soul. You guide me in right paths for your name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are at my side; with your rod and your staff you comfort me.

You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and kindness will follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long.
