Sunday of the Prodigal Son

Gospel: Luke 15: 11– 32

Readings: 2 Corinthians 13: 5 – 13

Some might think that today’s Gospel is the centre of St. Luke’s Gospel, preceded by the lost sheep and the lost penny. These are normal situations that could happen to anyone everyday. The importance of the two parables comes from Jesus’ educational opinion. “I say to you: the angels will rejoice when a sinner repents.”

The explanation gives the three parables great significance because it explains the value of the sinner in God’s eyes. Jesus continues to show “The Forgiving Father” before the tax collectors and the sinners. That father doesn’t deny his son’s right at a private life. Once the son starts to spend wildly, he wears the form of the sinner and throws away all the values and follows the sin.

After losing everything he gets a job equivalent to his financial situation. The son will decide to go back to give a meaning to his life. The reality is different. The father doesn’t have time to hear his son. He is rejoicing because his son is back.

St. Patrick, Bishop, March 17

St. Patrick was born in 385. He was of a Roman-British heritage and his father, Calpurnius, was a deacon and a municipal official. He was seized from his father’s farm at age sixteen by Irish raiders who sold him into slavery in pagan Ireland. Six years later, he escaped and returned to his home.

His captivity, however, had a deep religious effect on him and he longed to bring his Christian faith to the Irish people. In a dream, he heard, “the voice of the Irish” calling him back.

Patrick studied at the monastery of Lérins, off the coast of France from 412 to 415. He was ordained about 417. About 432, Patrick was appointed bishop and went to Ireland.

He went to the north and west of Ireland where the local Irish leaders welcomed him. Soon he established churches throughout the country and converted many. Patrick’s own account of his conversion and missionary life is known as the Confessio.

In it he saw himself as a humble instrument in God’s hands, given gifts of wisdom and strength to bring an alien people to the true faith. Patrick died in 461. He is the patron of Ireland.

I arise today, through God’s strength to pilot me, God’s might to uphold me, God’s wisdom to guide, God’s eyes to look before me,

God’s ears to hear me, God’s word to speak for me, God’s hand to guard me, God’s way to lie before me,

God’s shield to protect me, God’s host to save me from snares of devils, from temptations of vices, from every one who shall wish me ill, afar and anear, alone and in a multitude…

                        “St. Patrick.”

Prayer to St. Joseph

O Blessed St. Joseph, father and faithful guardian of Jesus, chaste spouse of the Mother of God, I pray you to join with me in praising God the Father through his divine Son who died on the Cross and rose again to give us sinners new life.

Through the holy name of Jesus, pray that we obtain from the Father the favour we ask for (State intention). We have been unfaithful to the love of God; beg of Jesus mercy for us. Amen.
