St. Ephrem,
Deacon and Doctor, June 9th
St. Ephrem was
born at Nisibis, Mesopotamia in 306. He was baptized at the age of
eighteen and became a companion of the bishop of Nisibis, St. James.
It is thought that he might have accompanied James to the Council of
Nicaea in 325. Nisibis was handed over to the Persians by Emperor
Jovian in 363.
Ephrem left
immediately and retreated to a cave in the mountains overlooking
Edessa. A poet and hymn writer, he wrote many hymns while in Edessa.
He gave the Church of his day many compositions for its liturgy and
devotion.
He was known
as “the Harp of the Holy Spirit.” Ephrem was revered by other great
saints, such as St. Jerome, for his deep faith and wisdom. In 370,
he went to Caesarea to visit St. Basil, and in 372, Ephrem organized
an extensive program for victims of famine in his native land.
Weakened by his many labours, he died at Edessa in 373. He is a
Doctor of the Church.
Lord, shine on
our darkened souls your great light of wisdom that we may see and so
serve you.
Only in
sunlight we can go about our tasks; give us day without end so that
we may know your risen life.
“St. Ephrem”
Prayer to the
Sacred Heart
O Divine Heart
of Jesus, I beseech you, eternal rest to the souls in purgatory,
final grace to all who are to die today, true repentance to sinners,
your blessing to me and to all who are mine. To you, O most loving
Heart of Jesus, do I therefore commend all these souls, and for them
I offer al your merits, together with the merit of the most Blessed
Mother and of all the saints and angels, and also together with all
the sacrifices of the Mass and the Holy Communion in the world.
Amen.
