Sunday of the Priests

Gospel: Luke 12:42– 48

Readings: 1 Timothy 4: 6 – 16

“Who then is the faithful and prudent manager?” He is the one who knows that the Master is coming undoubtedly. He is the one who also knows that what he does now will be questioned later by the Master.

The honor of the servant depends on the way he performs his duties, “Blessed is that slave whom his master will find at work when he arrives.” The prudent servant is the one who lives and acts according to the knowledge that his Master is coming so he changes his daily human relationships and behavior.

The prudent servant is the one who keeps watch during the night so the coming of the Master won’t surprise him. Instead it will mean for him that the promise of the Lord is going to be done as promised. We are drowning in the earthly materialism that covers us in a way that makes us forget that we can’t see or face the truth about eternity.

We are facing the danger of letting ourselves go into the flow of money, authority, power and desire. God is inviting us to fight against the theory of “Being powerful is having authority.” The Mater who is absent now will come soon. The power of wealth won’t help us then.

Presentation of Jesus, February 2nd

Forty days after his birth, Jesus was presented in the temple by Mary and Joseph to fulfill Jewish Law. There he was recognized by Simeon and Anna, who lived in Jerusalem at the time. They were waiting for the coming Messiah. Simeon was just and pious, and awaited the consolation of Israel.

It was revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not experience death until he had seen the Anointed of the Lord. He came to the temple, now, inspired by the Spirit; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform for him the customary ritual of the law, he took him in his arms and blessed God in these words: “Now, Master, you can dismiss your servant in peace; you have fulfilled your word.

For my eyes have witnessed your saving deed displayed for all the people to see; a revealing light to the Gentiles, the glory of the people of Israel.” This feast, celebrated by the Christian Churches of East and West at an early date, has also been called “Candlemas Day” because candles are blessed and lighted this day on which Simeon called Jesus “A Light to the Gentiles.”

Christ your Son became man for us and was presented in the temple.

Prayer for Priests

Keep them, I pray Thee, dearest Lord, keep them, for they are Thine. Thy priests whose lives burn out before Thy consecrated shrine.

Keep them, for they are in the world. Though from the world apart; when earthly pleasures tempt, allure, shelter them in Thy heart.

Keep them, and comfort them in hours of loneliness and pain, when all their life of sacrifice for souls but in vain.

Keep them as spotless as the Host, that daily they caress; their every thought and word and deed, deign, dearest Lord, to bless. Amen.

Prayer for Society

O Jesus, come back into our society, our family life, our souls, and reign there as our peaceful sovereign.

Enlighten with the splendour of faith and charity of your tender heart the souls of those who work for the good of the people, for your poor.

Impart in them your own Spirit, a Spirit of discipline, order and gentleness, preserving the flame of enthusiasm ever alight in their hearts.
