Presentation of
Jesus, February 2nd
Forty days after his birth, Jesus was presented in the temple by
Mary and Joseph to fulfill Jewish Law. There he was recognized by
Simeon and Anna, who lived in Jerusalem at the time. They were
waiting for the coming Messiah. Simeon was just and pious, and
awaited the consolation of Israel.
It was revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not
experience death until he had seen the Anointed of the Lord. He came
to the temple, now, inspired by the Spirit; and when the parents
brought in the child Jesus to perform for him the customary ritual
of the law, he took him in his arms and blessed God in these words:
“Now, Master, you can dismiss your servant in peace; you have
fulfilled your word.
For my eyes have witnessed your saving deed displayed for all the
people to see; a revealing light to the Gentiles, the glory of the
people of Israel.” This feast, celebrated by the Christian Churches
of East and West at an early date, has also been called “Candlemas
Day” because candles are blessed and lighted this day on which
Simeon called Jesus “A Light to the Gentiles.”
Christ your Son became man for us and was presented in the temple.
Prayer for
Priests
Keep them, I pray Thee, dearest Lord, keep them, for they are Thine.
Thy priests whose lives burn out before Thy consecrated shrine.
Keep them, for they are in the world. Though from the world apart;
when earthly pleasures tempt, allure, shelter them in Thy heart.
Keep them, and comfort them in hours of loneliness and pain, when
all their life of sacrifice for souls but in vain.
Keep them as spotless as the Host, that daily they caress; their
every thought and word and deed, deign, dearest Lord, to bless.
Amen.
Prayer for
Society
O
Jesus, come back into our society, our family life, our souls, and
reign there as our peaceful sovereign.
Enlighten with the splendour of faith and charity of your tender
heart the souls of those who work for the good of the people, for
your poor.
Impart in them your own Spirit, a Spirit of discipline, order and
gentleness, preserving the flame of enthusiasm ever alight in their
hearts.
