Third Sunday after the Epiphany of the Lord

Gospel: John 3:1– 16

Readings: Galatians 3: 23 – 29

John’s Gospel is different from the others Gospels by mentioning two important incidents in the life of Jesus who revealed his glory to his disciples. They believed in him as the Messiah through the miracle of the wine, and as the Son of God in the Temple.

After these two incidents, John mentioned three main attitudes in the apostleship faith: Nicodemus the Jew, the Samaritan woman and the pagan soldier. The Church invites us this Sunday, to reflect on the Messiah’s truth unveiled to Nicodemus and through him to the Jewish people. Nicodemus is one of many who believed in Jesus through the miracles he performed in Jerusalem on Passover.

His faith remained superficial. He was invited by Jesus to a deeper and more complete faith, to a new spiritual birth. He followed Jesus and moved forward on the paths of faith. John divides the conversation into three parts:

the mysterious work of the Holy Spirit, the work of the Son, who died and was raised from the dead, and the work of the Father who sent his only Son to save the world.

The Conversion of St. Paul, January 25

The Church celebrates the conversion of St. Paul because of its extraordinary nature. Paul, who was known as Saul before his conversion, was born in Tarsus in Cilicia, to Jewish parents. He became an avowed enemy of the infant Church and engaged in the persecution of Christians. Between the years 34 and 36, Paul was on his way to Damascus to arrest Christians and bring them back to Jerusalem.

Paul set out with the intention of bringing the prisoners he would arrest back to Jerusalem for punishment. As he was traveling along, approaching Damascus around noon, a great light from the sky suddenly flashed all about him. ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?’ He answered, ‘Who are you, sir?’ He said to him, ‘I am Jesus the Nazarene whom you are persecuting.’ His companions saw the light but did not hear the voice speaking to him, ‘What is it I must do, sir?’ He asked, and the Lord replied, ‘Get up and go into Damascus.

There you will be told about everything you are destined to do.’ But since he could not see because of the brilliance of the light, he had to be taken by hand and led into Damascus by his companions. There, he met Ananias who said to him, ‘Saul, my brother, recover your sight. Be baptized at once and wash away your sins as you call upon his name.’ Profoundly influenced by this grace of God, the converted apostle preached Christ to the nations.

Today the feast of Paul’s conversion ends the Church Unity Octave, an annual eight-day period of prayer for Christian unity. Inspired by Father Paul Watson, founder of the Society of the Atonement, this observance has spread from the United States to various other lands and is celebrated in many protestant and Orthodox as well as Catholic Churches.

Prayer For Unity

Almighty and merciful God, you willed that the different nations should become one people through your Son.
Grant in your kindness that those, who glory in being known as Christians, may put aside their differences and become one in truth and charity, and that all men, enlightened by the true faith, may be united in fraternal communion in the One Church.

We ask you this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
