Second Sunday after the Epiphany of the Lord

Gospel: John 1: 35–42

Readings: 2 Corinthians 4: 5 – 15

The invitation of the first disciples and the twelve apostles is a very remarkable point in Jesus’ public life and his saving mission. John the apostle gave this invitation a special look. He mentions that Jesus’ first apostles were John’s disciples.

The Baptist prepares the way for Jesus in a direct approach, not through testimony and Baptism only but through the invitation to his disciples to follow Jesus: “He should increase, and I should decrease.” Many people from the Corinthian Church had doubts about Paul’s apostleship and his mission, because he wasn’t a disciple of Jesus.

Paul was forced to protect his mission without complaining. He confirmed that nothing, not even death, can keep him away from being renewed daily in Christ. St. Paul’s mission got its importance, not from his human ability, but from God’s presence in him, and the shining of the knowledge of the glory in Jesus’ face. St. Paul’s mission is: hardship and death with Jesus the Crucified. It is also glory and eternal life with the risen Lord.

St. Anthony, Abbot, January 17

St. Anthony was born in the village of Koman, Upper Egypt in 250. He was born into a wealthy Christian family, and when his parents died in 269, he and his sister were left alone. About six months after his parents’ death, while in Church, he heard the words of the Gospel: “If you want to be perfect, go sell all you have, and give to the poor; and come, follow me and you will have a treasure in heaven.”

Anthony felt as if God was speaking directly to him. He immediately left the Church and gave all his property to the poor people of his village. Then, after providing for his sister, he left home to follow Christ. He chose to live in a deserted place not far from Koman, where he devoted himself to prayer and work with his hands.

Around the year 285, Anthony moved and settled on top of a mountain where he lived in solitude for nearly twenty years. The devil continually tempted him, but he became a stronger person.

Around the year 305, Anthony came down from the mountain and established the first Christian monastery in Fayum. In 312, he returned to a cave on Mount Kolzim with his disciple Macarius, and remained there for the rest of his life. Some adopted his life style and many became monks. He is called the Father of Monasticism.

Prayer for Christian Unity

Heavenly Father, we unite in prayer together with our sisters and brothers in Christ, of all Christian Churches, of all Christian denominations and groups, who will join with us in prayer because the Spirit of Jesus Christ is in us all. Together, Father, in your love for all your children in Christ, we lay these words upon the altar before the throne of God, which is the heart of all of us who know Jesus to be there. We are so thankful to you, God and we praise you. We pray to your, Good God master of the universe, and Giver of all Good. Amen.
