Sunday of the Faithfully Departed

Gospel: Luke 16:19– 31

Readings: 1 Thessalonians 5: 1 – 11

Today’s Gospel describes the life of Lazarus who was a poor man. This Gospel is a proof of God’s kept promise, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be billed.” This Gospel is an example of God’s love for the poor. God chose the poor to share in his glory.

The Gospel does not mention the bad habits of the rich but it mentions that he did not listen to Moses and the prophets. He did not know how to live the present without ignoring the eternal life. The only sin that the rich man committed was not sharing his wealth with the poor and the needy. The wealthy man did not abuse or humiliate Lazarus but at the same time, he did not do anything to help ease his pain or hunger.

A true Christian is not a person who doesn’t do evil, but a person who does good deeds. The conclusion of the text is a declaration that the living has “Moses and the prophets”. This will confirm the seriousness of the divine inspiration through the scriptures. People don’t have to wait for miracles to believe and repent.

The announcement is in our midst. We hear it on our paths of human life. It warns us to love God and our neighbours as ourselves. As we remember the faithfully departed, the Church reminds us through the letter to the Thessalonians that death comes suddenly without a warning. We have to be prepared by hearing the word of God and living by it.

Our Lady of Lourdes, February 11th

The Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette Soubirous fro, a cave near Lourdes, France, in 1858. From February 11 to July 16, the young peasant girl saw “the lady dressed in white” about eighteen times. Mary told her to pray for sinners and to have a church built on that spot. When Bernadette asked her who she was, she replied, “I am the Immaculate Conception.” Today the great shrine of Lourdes is a sacred place where pilgrims gather from all over the world for prayer, healing, and a renewal of faith.

God of mercy, may the prayers of Mary help us to rise above our human weakness.

Prayer after Mass

Soul of Christ, make me holy. Body of Christ, save me. Blood of Christ, fill me with love.

Water from Christ’s side, wash me.

Passion of Christ, strengthen me. Good Jesus hear me.

Within your wounds, hide me. Never let me be parted from you.

From the evil enemy, protect me.

At the hour of my death, call me, and tell me to come to you that with your saints I may praise you through all eternity.

Amen.
