Thirteenth Sunday of the Pentecost Season

Gospel: Luke 8: 1– 15

Readings: 1 Corinthians 3: 1 – 11

This Sunday’s Gospel focuses on preaching the good news. The parable of the sower is a tool to make the mystery of the kingdom more comprehensible.

St. Paul insists on mentioning that he and all the apostles are not philosophers with great theories. They are servants of Christ the Lord and his word. The disciple works hard but is awarded by the Lord.

The disciple’s missionary work doesn’t end with his own will and tiredness but with the Lord’s will and grace. The base of the disciple’s life is Jesus who is the cornerstone. We are in a real partnership with the Father and his Son Jesus and his Holy Spirit.

The laws of this partnership are: avoid sin, live the commandments, especially love, keep away from the earthly riches and the false Messiah. The center of the Christian Church is: Jesus who preached in the cities and towns and the twelve disciples and some ladies.

In this parable we have four kinds of soil: the path, the rock, the thorns and the good soil. Four destinies face these kinds of soil: the seed that fell on the path and was trampled on and the birds of the air ate it up, the seed that grew and then withered for lack of moisture.

The seed that fell among the thorns and the thorns grew with it and choked it, the seed that fell into good soil, and when it grew, it produced a hundredfold.

We are asked to hear the Lord’s word and live according to it and be saved by it. By doing so, we become known as the faithful disciples to the apostles and children of Christ’s Church.

St. Bartholomew, Apostle, August 24

St. Bartholomew, one of the twelve apostles, was born in Galilee and is probably the same person as Nathaniel, whom Philip brought to see Jesus of Nazareth.

“Can anything good come from that place?,” Nathaniel asked. (John 1: 45 – 51) Jesus called him an Israelite incapable of deceit, an honest, straightforward man, and promised that heaven would open for him and the mysteries of God would be revealed before his eyes.

Like some other apostles, little is known about St. Bartholomew’s activity after Pentecost. According to some reports, he preached the Gospel in Armenia and India and was beaten and beheaded by King Astyages for his faith in Christ.

The Queenship of Mary, August 22nd

Following the feast of Mary’s Assumption into heaven on August 15th, the feast of her Queenship celebrates her place among the angels and saints as the Queen of Heaven and earth.

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life our sweetness and our hope. To you do w send up our sighs mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile show us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

Prayer for Peace

O God, open our eyes that we may see the needs of others; open our ears that we may hear their cries; open our hearts that we may feel their anguish and their joy.

Let us not be afraid to defend the oppressed, the poor, the powerless, because of the anger and might of the powerful. Show us where love and hope and faith are needed, and use us to bring them to those places. Open our ears and eyes, our hearts and lives that we may in these coming days be able to do some work of justice and peace for you. Amen.
