Eleventh Sunday of the Pentecost Season, Transfiguration Feast

Gospel: Luke 19: 1– 10

Readings: Ephesians 2: 17 – 22

Today we celebrate the Transfiguration of the Lord on the mount. With Peter, James and John we reflect on this exquisite spectacle through two readings.

The first is the second letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians in which he says: “The people of Israel could not gaze at Moses’ face because of the glory of his face.”

In the Gospel of St. Mark, we read about the Transfiguration: “His clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them.”

The apostles understood more to Jesus’ predictions about his passion and death. They did not stop at the Resurrection either. The suffering and death are the two most powerful factors in our earthly life.

They scare and depress us. But we are always reminded that death is not the end. Just as the apostles witnessed the Transfiguration, we, too, can bear witness during the most difficult times of our lives and the happy ones too.

We should let Jesus lead us to the mount, like the apostles. Our own power won’t get us to the top of the mountain, but the power of Jesus.

If we give in to his mercy, we become Peter, John and James. Each one of us becomes the beloved apostle if we accept Jesus’ invitation.

The Transfiguration of Jesus, August 6th

The divinity of Christ was made manifest to Sts. Peter, James & John when Jesus appeared before them on Mount Tabor and his face and clothing shone radiantly.

His appearance before the apostles was a confirmation to them of his relation to the Church and his role as the Son of God.

A feast in honour of the Transfiguration has been celebrated in the Christian churches of the East since the fifth century.

In the Middle Ages, as interest grew in the Holy Land and the various sites connected with the life of Jesus, this feast was established in the Western Roman Empire.
