Fourth Sunday of the Easter Season

Gospel: John 21: 1 – 14

Readings: Hebrews 13: 18 – 25

This Sunday reminds us of the apparition of Jesus to seven of his disciples by the Sea of Tiberias.

The miraculous fish symbolizes the fishing of people at the hand of the disciples. The net is a symbol of the Church which has to gather in the risen Lord all the people of the earth, to give them the salvation.

Jesus is the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant. He makes us complete in everything good so that we may do God’s will. We are committed through Jesus to complete the will of God and to live according to his laws.

The seven disciples did not catch any fish. It seems like the mission of casting the line for fish has been completed and that of casting the line for people to the salvation has started. Jesus is present with us. He is risen. They recognized him from the abundance of the fish and their net that did not tear.

The beloved disciple was the first one to recognize him. By taking the bread and giving it to them in communion, Jesus clearly indicated the Holy Eucharist, through which we meet Jesus, the Risen Lord present with us until the end of days.

St. Joseph the Worker, May 1st

On May 1st, 1955, Pope Pius XII addressed the Catholic Association of Italian Workers and declared that this day would be known as the feast day of St. Joseph the Worker.

In the Communist bloc, May 1st is celebrated as May Day, which glorifies the relationship between the worker and the socialist state. It is obvious that the Church was very concerned with this, and wanted to demonstrate to its faithful that it was equally concerned about the plight of the working man and woman.

Joseph, a carpenter, taught his trade to his son, Jesus, and provided for his family. It is especially important to remember this human element when contemplating the lives of both St. Joseph and the Holy Family.

Lord God, maker of all things, you give us skill of mind and body to labour and serve in this world. May we follow the way of St. Joseph who worked with Christ at his side, and may all we do be a sign of your greatness and power.

St. Philip and St. James May 3rd

St. Philip was born at Bethsaida in Galilee. He was one of the apostles and a disciple of John the Baptist. He heard the call of Jesus, “Follow me,” and accompanied Jesus on his public ministry. He is mentioned in St. John’s Gospel, and invited the apostle, Bartholomew, to come and see Christ.

At the Last Supper he said to Jesus, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough.” According to tradition, Philip was present with the apostles who spent ten days waiting in the upper room in Jerusalem for the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

After the death of Christ, Philip preached the Gospel in Phrygia, Asia Minor. He was martyred at Hierpolis by soldiers loyal to Emperor Domitian.

St. James, also known as James the Less, was one of the twelve apostles and is called “the son of Alpheus” and “the brother of the Lord” in the Gospels.

It is assumed, however, that he was most likely a cousin of Jesus. He is believed to be the author of the Epistle of St. James in the New Testament.

James was appointed the Bishop of Jerusalem and was present at the Council of Jerusalem. He was also present with the apostles in the upper room awaiting the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. James remained in Jerusalem after Pentecost and was stoned to death there in 62.
